That’s what SHE said: Smokin’ hot wives, harems, guns on playdates, orgasmic cookie butter, and the indignities of shopping at Forever 21

May 7, 2013

The Prince and I | The Moth LISTEN Smokin’ Hot Wives & Water to the Soul | The Nuance It occurred to me that not once in the entire week did I hear any male leader talk about his smokin’ hot wife. Nor even an Obama-esque gaffe about being “cute” or “good-looking.” And that’s because this obsessive male Christian mentality can’t exist where women are speaking and preaching and leading in the same roles as men, mutually submitted to Christ and each other. Such an environment literally chokes . . .

Is Iron Man 3 appropriate for kids? A content guide for parents

May 4, 2013

If you have children over the age of 6, chances are they are talking about the new Iron Man film. My oldest son is 8 and he and his friends have been buzzing about the new movie for weeks. Jafta and I had a chance to preview Iron Man 3 a few weeks ago, and many other parents have asked for feedback about whether or not the movie is appropriate for kids. I’m going to do my best to detail the information parents will want to make an informed decision about the movie, without giving away the plot. . . .

Then we turned our attention to the even more groundbreaking issue of celebrity style, sharing which celebrity moms we feel have the best fashion sense. P.S. You can watch our recap . . .

Yogurt and kale popsicles

May 1, 2013

Getting my kids to eat their veggies is always a challenge, and recently I tried a new treat that did the trick. In fact, it worked so well that I"m still pinching myself a little bit, because all four of my kids just downed a hefty serving of kale. Willingly. Oh happy day! I know, I know. The thought of "kale pops" makes me shudder, too. But the creamy yogurt and sweet fruit really masked the veggies well. I’ve got the recipe up at Babble today. . . .

Mama Said: What celebrity crushes are on your “list”?

April 30, 2013

Sarah James and I decided to keep it completely shallow this month in our Mama Said videos. After discussing topics like guilt and introversion and social anxiety, we decided to do a whole month dedicated to fluff. Specifically: celebrity fluff. In our first video, we discussed our “lists”.  (You know . . . the list of celebrities you get a free pass with, in case the opportunity should ever arise.) Watching this video made me laugh because our answers illustrated our own individual . . .

Spring Break: The preview of how much summer will suck

April 29, 2013

The week before last, the older kid were on spring break. The week before that, Karis was on spring break. A few weeks before that, the older kids were off school for “ski week”.  I feel like I am still playing catch-up. I’ve written about this before, but one of the challenges of choosing to work part-time while the kids are in school is that, inevitably, there are times when they AREN’T in school that throw a wrench into my plans. That was definitely the case over spring break. I had a . . .

Five reasons you should try geocaching with your kids

April 26, 2013

Our family attempted geocaching a few years ago. I thought it would be a fun activity to do together, and the hidden treasure aspect was exciting for all of us. But alas, the kids were a bit too young, and our phones were a bit too outdated, and we flew too close to the sun. It was a disaster.  We may have built the expectations up too high, because the kids were bent on finding all kinds of buried toys, and all that was really happening was two adults arguing over whether or not there was . . .

Win your own interior designer: a Box of Design giveaway!

April 25, 2013

If you have always wanted to hire a professional design but it’s been out of your price range, you are going to love the concept of Box of Design. Interior designer Hillary Nichols started Box of Design with the mission to make design accessible and affordable. Here’s how it works: Hilary let me try her services with my living room, and I can’t tell you what a help it was for me. I love design, but I have never worked with  a designer before.  I tend to get a bit paralyzed in the . . .
