Why travel is important as an adoptive family

November 15, 2015

This post is sponsored by HomeAway in honor of National Adoption Day. It creates empathy for others. Many people have noted that there was much more empathy and outrage for the terrorist attacks in Paris then there were for the people living in Beirut. A large part of this is that we tend to have empathy for people that we understand and are familiar with. Many people have traveled to Paris. Not as many to Beirut. My hope is that by traveling to places all over the world and exposing my kids too . . .

That’s what SHE said: mercy as a response to terror, what it takes to forgive murder, the protests at University of Missouri, interview with a transracial adoptee, garlic, parenting advice and more…

November 15, 2015

LET MERCY FOR REFUGEES BE THE RESPONSE TO THE PARIS ATTACKS | theestablishment.com Margaret Covid makes a compelling argument / plea to France's president to respond with mercy as opposed to the current response which is to shut the country's borders, effectively sealing the fate of thousands of refugees suffering in refugee camps as the weather turns..."Why is Hollande using the refugees as hostages, condemning them with his border closure to a death that is slower but no less certain than . . .

Strategies for creating the best holiday photo cards (and a Minted and Stitchfix giveaway!)

November 13, 2015

I love having portraits of our whole family together. In our everyday lives, I’m usually the one behind the camera, and it’s rare to get all four kids in a picture, so it’s nice to get a photo with everyone together once a year. I love looking back at our yearly photos – it’s like a snapshot of that age and stage. We send out holiday photo cards every year so that’s my motivator (and reminder) to get new photos taken every year. What I don't love: taking the family portrait.  Oh my word, . . .

What I want you to know about living with someone who has been suicidal

November 13, 2015

What I Want You to Know is a series of reader submissions. It is an attempt to allow people to tell their personal stories, in the hopes of bringing greater compassion to the unique issues each of us face. If you would like to submit a story to this series, click here.  Today’s guest post is by Jessica Belf Vincent. The death of Robin Williams hit me hard. I was sad for the loss of a great man who brought people such light was gone. But more than sadness, I was . . .

Wednesday’s Child: Daniel

November 11, 2015

Every Wednesday I feature a child recently highlighted by a local Wednesday's Child newscast to share the stories of children from around the country who are waiting for a family. My hope is that this can broaden exposure for the children highlighted, but also serve as a reminder that these children represent thousands of children currently in the foster-care system. Perhaps their stories will inspire you to consider opening your home to a child needing a family. For more information and to . . .

Easy, no-measure cakepops that kids can make

November 10, 2015

A couple years ago I was trying to negotiate around doing the traditional “bag of plastic crap” goodie bag for India’s birthday party. I don’t like buying these, assembling these, or sending them home so that other parents can figure out how long until they can throw away the plastic top, ring, and frog-that-sticks-to-the-window that we gave them. I had the idea of doing cakepops because it’s consumable, and also something easy and affordable that we could make at home. India loved making and . . .

Always thought about adopting? Here’s why you should do it FIRST

November 9, 2015

I can’t even count the number of times a person has mentioned to me that they had “always thought about adopting” but never got around to it. I’ve also got several friends whose family plan always involved adoption, but who started with biological children and then found themselves feeling like their family was full. Many people consider adoption, but few go through with it. Adoption isn’t for everyone, but there are still so many children (especially in the US fostercare system) who need a . . .
