the panic button
It is almost midnight in Orlando. Our race is in 6 hours. We have to wake up at 4am to get to our corrals on time, and I should be sleeping, but I can't. I have been having a great time with the gals, bonding over adoption and Haiti and running and the eating of carbs. But I am beginning to really panic. Not just a little nerves, or a case of the jitters. More like a DEFCON 5 freak-out.Remember when I said I was having stress dreams about this race, where everything was going awry? All . . .
big bundle of nerves
I am on my way to Orlando today for my big half marathon weekend. The last few days have been a mix of giddiness, anxiety, and excitement. I've even been having stress dream about the race - like the kind you get before prom, where you can't find your dress and have to go naked. Only this time my dreams involve it being race day and me not being able to find my ipod or my running shoes. Or the latest, a dream where I somehow got separated from all the runners and got totally lost, and by the . . .
common creole phrases
I'm spending a few days in Haiti after our big race in Orlando this weekend, so I wanted to brush up on some Creole phrases. I just did an online search and came across a website with a link to "Common Creole Phrases". I guess someone has determined these to be amongst the most likely sentences one would need to navigate their way in Haiti? After a couple salutations, key words, and the days of the week, we find the following phrases:Mwen pa two byen - I'm not too well Mwen malad - I'm . . .
Kindergarden Informaion Night
Jafta will be starting kindergarten in the fall, and I am having a really hard time figuring out where he will attend school. I am a big proponent of public school on a number of levels, and I've always been vocal about wanting our kids in the neighborhood school. I found this to be a great ideology to hold while my kids were too small to attend school, but now that it's MY kid who is old enough to be the next student at the Title I down the street, my principles are faltering. I've been . . .
mystery roll
I was cleaning out the garage the other day, and I found a roll of film. Remember rolls of film? Before digital, when we used to have to take those 35mm cartridges in to Rite Aid (before they became CVS) to have them developed? Yep, that will be a story for the grandkids someday. Anyway, I really haven't used a 35mm camera in several years, so I was very curious to find out what was on the roll. I took it to Target, and when I picked it up, I found about a year's worth of photos. My guess . . .
the present of presence
I'm not really making a bunch of resolutions this year. I'm starting out the year running my first half-marathon, so I'm feeling pretty proud of myself, and not looking to make more goals involving self-discipline or achievement. I am wanting to make some changes, though, and it's tricky because the changes I need to make really revolve around NOT checking things off of a list. I have an incessant need to feel a sense of achievement or completion each day. I was poking fun at this tendency . . .
holiday hangover
Well, the holidays have come and gone, and like so many years past, I sit here feeling like I need another week just to recover from the madness. I have a horrible, horrible habit of overcommiting myself during the holiday season. A combination of poor boundaries, people-pleasing, and perfectionism mean that I spend most of December engaged in some Stepford wife/Martha Stewart wannabe version of my actual life. That, coupled with the fact that I sometimes think the holidays were something . . .
A Knight to Remember
So, about Medieval Times. It was an epic birthday for Jafta. The entire time we were there I kept thinking about the part in The Cable Guy when they go to Medieval Times. I think Jafta's excitement made Jim Carrey's enthusiasm look like mere indifference. And you know Jafta showed up in full costume.I really had no desire to do a birthday at Medieval Times, but I also had no desire to plan any sort of party two days after Christmas. (Note to those of you in the family-planning stages: try . . .
