let’s build a school in haiti for Christmas
Remember when I went to Haiti last month with Help One Now? It was such an amazing trip with a great group of people – a group of movers and shakers and dreamers. The trip was full of passionate talk about social justice and how we were going to change the world. And yes, the reality is that the dozen of us on that trip probably won’t change the whole entire world. But we found our “field” to work, so to speak. We had an amazing experience but all of us felt this nagging to do a bit more than . . .
$#!@ People Say On Facebook During Elections: THE VIDEO
Yesterday a couple friends and I decided to bring a little levity to the gloom-and-doom we were seeing on facebook in regards to the election. I’ve said this before, but while I have strong political beliefs, I also firmly believe that the foundation of our country (and our lives) will not be changed based on a Republican or a Democrat taking office. I watched with amusement last week as people on facebook predicted the end of our lives as we know it if one side or the other won. So, a . . .
@#$* people say during elections
We’ve all seen it . . . political statements on facebook and twitter that go a step too far. The status updates that venture way beyond sharing political ideology, and have devolved into paranoia, fear-mongering, future predicting, maximizing, or out-and-out lying about what will happen if the other candidate wins. I’ve been seeing it all week, from both sides. So, to bring a little levity to the situation, let’s share some of the craziest things we’ve seen. Both sides are fair targets. What . . .
on being a Christian and voting as a Democrat
Tomorrow is the big election day, and I’m sure many of us are ready for the political fighting on facebook to be OVER. I know I am. It’s been another discouraging season as I’ve watched Christian friends (and family) cast judgment on anyone not towing the line with the Religious Right. I’ve been open about my political beliefs but I’ve also tried to avoid being negative and defensive, but today a couple things have prompted me to explain why, as a Christian, I’m voting as a Democrat. . . .
right mom/left mom: race and religion in the 2012 election
Was this political season racially charged? In our latest episode, Elizabeth and I talk about the role that race has played in this election, as well as the unique concerns people had about a Mormon candidate. Click here to watch! . . .
mama said: working moms and childcare woes
In our latest episode of Mama Said, Sarah and I talk about the difficulties of figuring out childcare as working moms, and in our case, specifically, as moms who work from home. Click here to watch this episode! If you work from home, or out-of-the-home, what do you do for childcare? Do they have a nanny, or do they go somewhere outside the home? Is it a big issue for you, or do you feel like you’ve got in managed? . . .
bobs for all
Yesterday I took the girls to get a haircut. India is loving her “bob” and it was beginning to reach her shoulders, so she wanted it a little shorter. But the real impetus was the fact that Karis got gum in her hair on the airplane, and we ended up having to chop her hair in a hotel room in Miami just before boarding our cruise. It was a pretty rough cut with scissors purchased at the drug store nearby, so I wanted to have a stylist clean it up. I’ve been going to Natalie Jones at Hush . . .
holiday photo wardrobe decisions
If you follow me on any other social media channels you know I am in my annual “obsess over family portrait wardrobe” phase. The advent of me joining Pinterest this year hasn’t helped, because now there are other similar obsessives who post wardrobe ideas, and I spent yesterday searching through fun Polyvore collages until I decided that I MUST MAKE SOME TOO. You see, I’m late on some deadlines and need to be making some important decisions on the remodel and still haven’t unpacked from our . . .
halloween hangover
We are still recovering from Halloween over here. Let’s be honest . . . we are still recovering from our cruise! October was a very fun month but mama’s tired. We got home from the cruise two days before Halloween, and I was such a scrooge about the whole thing because I was so exhauster and so behind with unpacking/work/life. (I can finally walk without feeling like the world is rocking, thank-you-very-much). Fortunately I had ordered the costumes and candy well in advance, since I knew . . .
twenty-one kid-friendly features onboard royal caribbean
I wanted to share some of the best aspects of our cruise in relation to traveling with the kids. This was supposed to be a top ten list, but I couldn’t narrow it down to 10. Or 15. Or even 20. As a Fisher Price ambassador, one of the reasons for our trip was to experience the ways Fisher Price and Royal Caribbean have teamed up to make the cruise even more fun for young families. Here are a few of the stand-out features of the Allure of the Sea for my kids: Free ice cream All day, every . . .
