On this day of celebrating the legacy of Martin Luther King, I thought I would share some resources for talking to kids about racism, including both the historical context of our country as well as the present-day issues of prejudice. I am a firm believer that we should be talking to our kids about racial differences from a very young age. At a certain age, all kids are prone to leaving others out based on external factors. recycling brown bags as custom wrapping paper
I thought I would share a simple way we recycle old grocery bags in our house. I try my best to use reusable bags, but inevitably I remember them at the checkout stand with a pile full of groceries in my cart, after it’s too late to run to the car and fetch them. When this happens I ask for paper bags, and once I’m home I fold them up and stash them in a drawer. Whenever we have a birthday party to attend, I will pull one out and use it as wrapping paper, and then let the kids decorate . . .

Okay, fellow Downton Dorks. As many of you noted, Sarah and I got our episodes confused, since we cheated and watched the British version instead of waiting for it to premiere in the US. The recap I posted on Sunday for episode 2 was actually a discussion of the 2nd half of the US premiere, since the two first British episodes were combined for us here. holiday road trip, part 3: a race to the hospital
Okay, I’ve been wanting to share this part of our holiday trip, but needed to find the time and space to write it all out. As I mentioned before, my entire family (including my sisters, my mom, and 15 kids between us) drove out to Daytona to spend some time together at a resort by the beach. My sister Kim was due on December 31 but decided to go out anyway, since it was only about an hour from the hospital she where she planned to give birth. Everything was going along pretty uneventfully . . .
