best adoption announcement ever
Yesterday a friend tipped me off to this hilarious adoption announcement from photographer Kelli Higgins Kelly’s usual subjects are newborns. One day her 13-year-old adopted son mentioned that he was sad that he had no photos of himself as an infant. On a whim, they decided to have him reenact the typical poses of a newborn shoot.. She said they were cracking up through the whole process. On her facebook page, Kelli wrote: Here's my sweet not so little newborn! His name is Latrell and weighs . . .
Questions of Eternal Significance: What did you “do” in high school?
I wanted to lighten things up around here after a week of more serious topics, so I thought I’d throw out a random question. I’ve been doing this with the “Talk Back Tuesday” series and it has been so fun to read responses, but the reality is that every time I try to do a day-of-the-week focused series, I end up skipping and then wanting to post on another day and feeling stunted by my efforts at being scheduled when in reality it just isn’t going to happen. So. Talk Back Tuesdays shall . . .
what i want you to know about wanting a baby
What I Want You to Know is a series of reader submissions. It is an attempt to allow people to tell their personal stories, in the hopes of bringing greater compassion to the unique issues each of us face. If you would like to submit a story to this series, click here. Today’s guest posts is by Rachel. I’m confused. No, I’m downright exasperated. I have all these feelings I’ve never had before. Feelings related to…babies. Babies. There’s a word that’s never on my radar--a word I don’t . . .
“So Totally Relidge!”: A week in review (Superbowl Edition)
As Elizabeth and I contemplated the posts coming from faith blogs for our weekly recap, it was clear that one theme emerged: reactions to the Superbowl. I wrote one. Elizabeth wrote one. Seems like many people did. This week, we’re talking about the backlash to the sexist ads, and the infamous halftime performance. P.S. We’ve gotten some great feedback for this series so far, but a few of you asked about transcripts because the watching the video is too difficult. While transcripts . . .
power, performance, Beyonce, and what it means to “own your sexuality”
Like many Americas, I watched the Superbowl on Sunday while perusing the internet, and witnessed a variance of reactions to both the ads and the halftime show. Beyonce’s performance has sparked quite the national conversation, both in the secular and Christian blogosphere. I saw a wide range of opinions, from people who loved her performance to those who thought it to be too risqué, from some who viewed it as a show of female empowerment to others who thought she was a conduit of Satan . . .
So God made a farmer . . .
This is a sobering and necessary correction to the Ram Superbowl ads about farmers, via Cuéntame. I thought the original commercial was moving and well-done, but it was also racially problematic and culturally inaccurate. It’s important to recognize the diverse racial demographic of farmers in America, both historically and in present day. . . .
Reading Recommendations for Prospective Adoptive Parents
One of the most common questions I get from people who are considering adoption are recommendations for books to read as they start their journey. I thought it might be helpful to curate such a list that I could use to refer people to when they are seeking answers. Here are some great books to read as you begin the process. Adopt Without Debt: Creative Ways to Cover the Cost of Adoption Expanded Edition This book is an excellent guide for anyone who has wondered how on . . .
dishing on downton abbey: season 3, episode 5
Sarah and I are picking up the pieces of our broken lives after last week’s episode. Fortunately, this week was a little more upbeat. What did you think of this week’s episode? Do you think Lord Grantham and Cora’s marriage can be repaired? P.S. Have you seen the Lady Grantham quotes meme on Pinterest? These are cracking me up. that’s what SHE said: #fhbloggers edition
A Mother’s Heart | Logan Wolfram We remember what it is to dream again, and suddenly we can see ways to turn a life of street sweeping into a life with glimmers of hope. And there’s something very satisfying about knowing that you’ve accomplished something that without this group would have never been possible. That joining together as women, you can build each other up and make an even greater difference in the lives of your children. And then together, they can make a difference. Together…WE . . .
adoption in america
The Department of Social Work at USC sent me an infographic based on their adoption research, and I found it interesting and thought I would share. I was encouraged to see that the majority of adoptive parents were matched via foster care, and that most US adoptions involve children over the age of 1. What stands out to you? Any surprises? . . .
