So Totally Relidge! (a weekly recap of religion on the internet)

January 30, 2013

Elizabeth Esther and I really enjoyed doing our political weekly webcasts last year, and we’ve been looking for a way to collaborate again on something we both feel passionate about.  Esther and I are both ardent readers of blogs that deal with issues of faith and religion, and are frequently chatting (and even debating) about some of the things we’ve read. Recently, we decided that this would be a fun collaboration . . . to get together and chat about some of the hot topics coming . . .

best documentaries about social justice

January 29, 2013

I’ve been passionate about social justice issues since I was a teenager, and I’ve also had a long-standing love affair with the documentary genre of film.  So it’s no surprise that when a documentary turns the lens on social justice issues, I’m intrigued. Here are a few of my favorite films that explore both local and global issues. Children Underground This documentary is a brutal look into what happens when orphans in Eastern Europe age out of the system or run away from institutions. . . .

optical illusion lollipop valentine’s day cards

January 28, 2013

I’m not really a “handmade card” kind of mom.  I think it’s lovely that other moms are, but at this stage in our family there is usually just not enough time in the day for me to indulge in my creative side . . . beyond staring at the things other people are doing on Pinterest.  With Valentine’s Day approaching, though, I did decide to make some homemade cards, inspired in part by cards like this one.  But, if I’m to be totally honest, it was also inspired by my desire to not have . . .

that’s what SHE said: good reads on parenting

January 27, 2013

Playing Super Mario Brothers Is Not Wasting Time | Joy in this Journey But the most important part, the part that, when I remind myself to look for it, makes it less boring, less dull, more significant, is truth that my children need more than words from me. They need more than a hug, kiss, and whispered “I love you” when they run out the door to the school bus or when I tuck them in at night. They need me to show “I love you.” Buying things and giving in to their relentless requests might be . . .

on guilt and not volunteering at my kids’ school

January 23, 2013

A couple weeks ago I talked with my friend Sarah about my ambivalence in regards to volunteering at my kids’ school during one of our Mama Said episodes. I thought I would share the video here because I really do have some Big Feelings about it. Since filming that episode, I have volunteered a few times.  (I did it out of guilt, not because I feel like the classrooms will fall apart without parental help. We attend a school where parents are very involved.)  Again, I walked away . . .

the best satire reviews on amazon

January 23, 2013

There are a few things in life that make me inexplicably happy no matter what mood I’m in . . . things that restore my faith in humanity and lift my spirits regardless of what’s going on. Flashmobs are one of those things. I just grin even at the idea of random people coming together under the purpose of bringing cheer through a surprise dance. But there is another convergence of random people bringing joy that I want to talk about today: the phenomenon of satirical Amazon reviews. The comment . . .
