what i want you to know about growing up in daycare
What I Want You to Know is a series of reader submissions. It is an attempt to allow people to tell their personal stories, in the hopes of bringing greater compassion to the unique issues each of us face. If you would like to submit a story to this series, click here. Today’s guest posts is by an anonymous reader. I cried when my mom quit working full-time and took me out of day care. I love my parents. My mother bore me, raised me, cooked and presided over family dinners every night . . .
Let’s talk about the Oscars
Despite having seen all of two movies up for an Academy Award this year, I still tuned in to the Oscars last night . . . mostly to see what people were wearing. Honestly, I wasn’t blown away by the dresses this year. SO MANY black, white, and beige dresses. I thought Hallie Berry and Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman all looked great, but I feel like we’ve seen those dresses before. I also thought Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams looked ready to walk down the aisle. Too much. Here are . . .
that’s what SHE said: adult friendships, social media detox, the draw of Downton, gun-slinging Jesus, and more . . .
We Shall Race To The Place We Get Out Of The Playground: On Children and the Unbearable Lightness of Friendship | Her Bad Mother It is tempting to say something about how this has worsened in the age of the Internet, during which time friendship has yielded to ‘friending’, but I’m not entirely convinced that this is true. I’ve received much comfort and support from my online friendships; more importantly (because ‘comfort and support’ might be regarded as matters of utility, as . . .
design dilemma: to paint or not to paint
Alright, folks, I’m once again coming to you with a design dilemma . . . this time, about painting the fireplace. A few months ago I wrote about all of the different options for our fireplace, and due to the fact that we have basically run out of money, it looked like painting the thing was our only option. When we first bought the house, I felt like the fireplace was a huge eyesore in the middle of a dark and dingy house. Since that time, though, we have opened up walls, painted . . .
So Totally Relidge! The pope’s resignation, and the divide between whites and blacks on Sunday morning
This week, Elizabeth weighs in on the pope’s resignation, and I talk about the racial divide in American churches and my ambivalence about attending an African American church. What are your thoughts about the pope’s decision and the future of the Catholic church? And why do you think churches remain so segregated racially . . . and is it a problem we should try to solve? . . .
what i want you to know about children and drowning

If you would like to submit a story to this series, click here. Today’s guest posts is by Sarah. I have always been a bit paranoid about kids and water. Chalk it up to my life experiences, when I was young my best friend's sister died from drowning. In my line of work I have taken care . . .
This is the move that never ends . . . it just goes on and on and on . . .
Getting settled into our new house has become the bane of our existence for the last few months. It’s sort of like a new part-time job. One with crappy hours and no pay, and one that seems to have no end. There are several factors that have lead to this move taking much longer than it should have: 1. The remodel isn’t finished so we still have several unfinished projects 2. The fact that we only moved a few houses away means that we grossly underestimated the magnitude of this move 3. We both . . .
Is your smartphone kid-proof? How to keep adult content off your iphone and ipad
Mark and I recently updated our phones which means we have two older iphones available for the kids to play on when they earn screen time. We also often relinquish our own phones for the kids to play on, especially when we find ourselves in a long line or another situation where we need to keep the kids distracted. In addition to this, we’ve also got an ipad that the kids use from time to time. I love the educational apps that are available on the ipad and iphone platform. I’ve . . .
iphone photo dump: mid-february
It’s been a while since I’ve done a photo dump, so I’ve got some catching up to do! India spent a good portion of this month making personalize Valentine’s for each kid in the class. She was really determined and precise with making a list and checking off each name, and decorating the card with letters and hearts. It was cute to see her commit to a project and see it through, The kids got an electric guitar and drum set for Christmas, so they started a garage band. After about 15 minutes of . . .
