This week in iphone photos

April 14, 2014

This is how Karis dressed herself to go to the park. Soccer shirt, high heels, short skirt, purse, glasses, microphone, backpack. She contains multitudes. India and I had a chance to see Mama Mia at Segerstrom Center for the Arts. I was raised on Abba so this is one of my favorite shows, and it was so fun to take India for the first time. She loved it. We’ve been listening to it ever since. And watching the mom sing “Slipping Through my Fingers” with her tucked under my arm might have put me . . .

Bubblefest at Discovery Science Center

April 13, 2014

This week the kids and I went to see the Bubblefest show at the Discovery Science Center. We had seen this show two years ago and when the kids saw the signs go up, they begged to see it again. Hard to believe that two years ago, Karis was just a little toddler who had to sit in my lap! The Discovery Science Center has installed a number of fun activities around the show, which my kids enjoyed both before and after the main event. They tried their hand at making giant bubbles. Before the . . .

That’s what SHE said: Boring kids, trigger warnings, universal truths, sugar fasts, and more . . .

April 12, 2014

My Family Stopped Eating Sugar for a Year and This is What Happened | Everyday Health "Call me crazy, but avoiding added sugar for a year struck me as a grand adventure. I was curious as to what would happen. I wanted to know how hard it would be, what interesting things could happen, how my cooking and shopping would change. After continuing my research, I was convinced removing sugar would make us all healthier. What I didn’t expect was how not eating sugar would make me feel better in a very . . .

What song do you want sung at your funeral?

April 10, 2014

This question is inspired by my friend Chad, who asks the best questions on facebook. Initially I thought this would be a silly post, but the more I thought about my answer to this question, the more I thought, you know? Might as well make it official. So, Mark . . . kids . . . loved ones. The following are my instructions for my funeral. There is choreography involved. You’ve been warned. First, I’d like a little old-school gospel rendition of Johnny Cash & June Carter’s Will The Circle . . .

Wednesday’s Child: Luis in Scottsdale

April 9, 2014

Every Wednesday I share about a child recently highlighted by a local Wednesday's Child newscast to share the stories of children from around the country who are waiting for a family. Luis is 11 and loves football and playing outdoor. He would really like to have a forever family. My hope is that this can broaden exposure for the children highlighted, but also serve as a reminder that these children represent thousands of children currently in the foster-care system. Perhaps their stories will . . .

13 Gross Things All Moms Do

April 8, 2014

“Mom!? Gross!” I can’t tell you how many times I said that as a child. I said it as a teenager, too, only with an exaggerated eye roll. Mothers did a lot of disgusting things, including my own, and I swore I’d never do those things when I had my own children. I am a liar. As the mother of four kids, all four within a few years in age — I have from time-to-time found myself reverting to those disgusting behaviors I’d seen my own mother do. And other mothers. All mothers everywhere, for . . .

How to make facebook’s changes slightly less annoying

April 7, 2014

Over the past few weeks facebook has rolled out some changes, which have been met with some grumbling. By some mystery matrix, facebook is choosing which posts show up in your news feed, rather than just serving up status updates as they come. The result is that older status updates are showing up at the top, and others aren’t showing up at all. I’ve been frustrated to see the same status updates at the top of the news feed that were there hours before. I already read that! Why is it showing up . . .

That’s what SHE said: being color-brave, magical childhoods, singers on a plane, and more . . .

April 5, 2014

Be color brave, not color blind | Melody Hobson at TED2014 It’s time,” says Hobson, “for us to be comfortable with the uncomfortable conversation about race. If we truly believe in equal rights and equal opportunity in America, we need to have real conversations about this issue. We can’t be color blind, we have to be color brave.” Why should we be color brave, raising the question instead of ducking it? “Not just because it’s the right thing to do, but also because it’s the smart thing to . . .

Questions of eternal significance: how do you hang your toilet paper?

April 3, 2014

I've tackled some pretty controversial stuff this past week, but here's a debate I'm not sure we can survive. My friend Melanie waded into this territory last week and her readers were quite passionate in their views.  Here we go: Toilet paper. Over or under?   You guys, I have to admit. I don't really have a dog in this fight. I really don't care what way it's hung. I don't even notice. I couldn't even tell you what way ours is hanging as I typed this. (Okay, I looked. I . . .
