What song do you want sung at your funeral?

April 10, 2014

This question is inspired by my friend Chad, who asks the best questions on facebook.

Initially I thought this would be a silly post, but the more I thought about my answer to this question, the more I thought, you know? Might as well make it official. So, Mark . . . kids . . . loved ones. The following are my instructions for my funeral. There is choreography involved. You’ve been warned.

First, I’d like a little old-school gospel rendition of Johnny Cash & June Carter’s Will The Circle Be Unbroken. I remember hearing this sung at funerals as a child, and it just seems kind of lovely and celebratory.

Then, I’d like a little Spirit in the Sky. With clapping. Is the message a little obvious and heavy-handed? Sure it is.  But this is MY day, and you will clap along.

Lastly, I’d like my friends to stage a flash mob to Rocka My Soul in the Bosom of Abraham in the style of Alvin Ailey. If my funeral does not involve a flashmob then I am neither known nor loved. So be prepared. I’m assuming we’ve got plenty of time before you need to nail this choreography down, but you never know.

How about you? What songs would you like at your funeral?

If your answer is Take Me Higher by Creed, I don’t think we can be friends anymore.
