THE KITCHEN: before and after

March 12, 2013

I’ve been putting off posting pictures of the house because, while we’ve been living here for a bit, there is still so much to do.  But I thought I would share the before-and-after photos of our kitchen since it is technically done. I still need to “dress” the kitchen. We need window treatments and a backsplash and some accessories to tie it all together. But the bare bones are there, and I’m really please with the result. I posted last year about how much trouble I was having choosing the . . .

An introvert vs. extrovert weekend

March 12, 2013

Last week felt like an unusually full week, and I was pretty exhausted by the week’s end. The kids were supposed to have a football game right after school on Friday, and that morning we got an email letting us know the field was rained out, so the game was cancelled. The wildly different reactions we had to this news illustrates the difference between Mark and I.  Mark thinks, “Oh thank God we can go do something!” and I think: “Oh thank God we can do nothing!” Mark tried to convince me to . . .

that’s what SHE said: parenting edition

March 11, 2013

international women's day: 10 more things i want my daughter to know (by the time she's 18) | chookooloonks I want her to have a visceral understanding that she has life really good, and millions of people in the rest of the world have much tougher lives than she has.  I want her to realize that this is due simply to the fact that she happened to be born in a part of the world where opportunity is plentiful.  And therefore, I want her to find a way to use her own, unique gifts, . . .

Extracurricular insanity: the time I accidentally overscheduled my children

March 8, 2013

Towards the end of last year Sarah James and I filmed a Mama Said episode where we talked about the pressure to put kids in competitive extra-curricular activities.  If you watch, you can see I have some Big Feelings on the matter, and at the time I had resolved to resist the pressure to put my kids in a million activities, because I feel like inevitably it becomes too competitive and time-consuming for my liking.  I haven’t changed my views since the video, but I’ve done a 180 with . . .

Wondering if your child is old enough to see Oz the Great and Powerful?

March 8, 2013

Oz the Great and Powerful opens this weekend. If you have kids and are wondering if they are mature enough to see it, I’ve got some feedback. You can read my content guide for parents over at Babble.com. I had a chance to see a screening with Jafta, and I also got to attend a press conference with the cast. It was fun hearing them talk about the process and the behind-the-scenes aspects of making such a fantastical movie. For example: while Zac Braff’s character is done in CGI, he was actually . . .

Portrait of a marriage

March 7, 2013

Mark: Why is everyone laughing at this picture you put on instagram? I don’t get it. Me: Well, it’s two internet memes, juxtaposed together, so of course you don’t get it. Mark: Meme? What does “meme” mean? Me: Exactly. . . .

Best books for a lively book club discussion

March 6, 2013

I’ve been in the same book club for nearly ten years now.  It’s a pretty diverse group of women but we have one thing in common: we love to read. One Sunday a month we gather at the host’s house and discuss the themes, character, and merits of a different book.  But after the discussion is over, we spend almost as much time choosing our next book. We come armed with literary magazines, Amazon links, and recommendations for friends, and usually have about 10-12 books in consideration at . . .

Nine Inch Nails meets Carly Rae Jepsen and the result is . . . kind of awesome?

March 5, 2013

When I was a teenager I was a huge fan of Nine Inch Nails, and Head Like a Hole was on heavy rotation on the cassette-player in my car. Fast-forward to today, and I’ve got four picky back-seat DJ’s, with Call Me Maybe on repeat play in the minivan. So for some reason, this mash-up of Trent Reznor’s angry anthem backed up with bubblegum pop beats just tickles me to no end. Please to enjoy:     HT to The Verge. . . .

early March photo dump

March 5, 2013

The last week of February was a bit of a doozy. I was dealing with some severe allergies the very week that the kids had “ski week”.  Ski week is a week where the wealthy inhabitants of Orange County head to their ski chalets while the rest of us scramble for childcare or try to finish our work in the presence of bored children. In addition to having all four kids home, I also had 3-4 people working on the kitchen. While I lay sick on the sofa trying to write. It was not a fun week. The . . .
