that’s what SHE said: adult friendships, social media detox, the draw of Downton, gun-slinging Jesus, and more . . .

February 24, 2013

We Shall Race To The Place We Get Out Of The Playground: On Children and the Unbearable Lightness of Friendship | Her Bad Mother It is tempting to say something about how this has worsened in the age of the Internet, during which time friendship has yielded to ‘friending’, but I’m not entirely convinced that this is true. I’ve received much comfort and support from my online friendships; more importantly (because ‘comfort and support’ might be regarded as matters of utility, as . . .

design dilemma: to paint or not to paint

February 22, 2013

Alright, folks, I’m once again coming to you with a design dilemma . . . this time, about painting the fireplace.  A few months ago I wrote about all of the different options for our fireplace, and due to the fact that we have basically run out of money, it looked like painting the thing was our only option.  When we first bought the house, I felt like the fireplace was a huge eyesore in the middle of a dark and dingy house. Since that time, though, we have opened up walls, painted . . .

So Totally Relidge! The pope’s resignation, and the divide between whites and blacks on Sunday morning

February 21, 2013

This week, Elizabeth weighs in on the pope’s resignation, and I talk about the racial divide in American churches and my ambivalence about attending an African American church. What are your thoughts about the pope’s decision and the future of the Catholic church? And why do you think churches remain so segregated racially . . . and is it a problem we should try to solve? . . .

what i want you to know about children and drowning

February 20, 2013

What I Want You to Know is a series of reader submissions. It is an attempt to allow people to tell their personal stories, in the hopes of bringing greater compassion to the unique issues each of us face. If you would like to submit a story to this series, click here. Today’s guest posts is by Sarah. I have always been a bit paranoid about kids and water. Chalk it up to my life experiences, when I was young my best friend's sister died from drowning. In my line of work I have taken care . . .

This is the move that never ends . . . it just goes on and on and on . . .

February 20, 2013

Getting settled into our new house has become the bane of our existence for the last few months. It’s sort of like a new part-time job. One with crappy hours and no pay, and one that seems to have no end. There are several factors that have lead to this move taking much longer than it should have: 1. The remodel isn’t finished so we still have several unfinished projects 2. The fact that we only moved a few houses away means that we grossly underestimated the magnitude of this move 3. We both . . .

Is your smartphone kid-proof? How to keep adult content off your iphone and ipad

February 19, 2013

Mark and I recently updated our phones which means we have two older iphones available for the kids to play on when they earn screen time. We also often relinquish our own phones for the kids to play on, especially when we find ourselves in a long line or another situation where we need to keep the kids distracted.  In addition to this, we’ve also got an ipad that the kids use from time to time. I love the educational apps that are available on the ipad and iphone platform.  I’ve . . .

iphone photo dump: mid-february

February 18, 2013

It’s been a while since I’ve done a photo dump, so I’ve got some catching up to do! India spent a good portion of this month making personalize Valentine’s for each kid in the class. She was really determined and precise with making a list and checking off each name, and decorating the card with letters and hearts. It was cute to see her commit to a project and see it through, The kids got an electric guitar and drum set for Christmas, so they started a garage band. After about 15 minutes of . . .

Dishing on Downton Abbey: Season 3 Finale (The Christmas Special of Doom)

February 18, 2013

Well.  As you will see, Sarah and I move from speechlessness to anger to denial to just plain yelling.  A lot of yelling. SPOILER ALERTS AHEAD. This episode was shocking, to say the least. What will become of our beloved Downton family?  How are you coping with this horrific turn of events? . . .

that’s what SHE said: moms on cell phones, boys in the classroom, adoptees and gratitude, Strom Thurmon’s secret black daughter, and more . . .

February 17, 2013

I’m A Mom Of An Ordinary Kid I’m the mom that sits at TaeKwonDo tournaments and hopes for the first place that doesn’t come. I’m the mom that’s been at soccer games and basketball games and ached inside, wishing that the sheer will of my love for this kid could make a ball float effortlessly from his foot or hand into the goal or hoop. The Boys at the Back | NYTimes.com There are some who say, well, too bad for the boys. If they are inattentive, obstreperous and distracting to their teachers . . .
