That’s what SHE said: orphan t-shirts, insidious quotes, emasculating dudes, and more . . .

March 15, 2014

Please Reconsider That [Orphan] T-Shirt | Tara Vanderwoude Then add the presence of one of the t-shirts, pushing him into the spotlight further and without his consent, and it screams, “THIS KID WAS AN ORPHAN!” It makes the child, even if unintentionally, the poster child for international adoption or for orphan care. Yes, the child instantly becomes an advertisement for adoption. Top Easiest Ways To Emasculate A Dude (And Rule The World) I don’t think anyone should be emasculating anyone . . .

What it feels like to be a foster child

March 14, 2014

A friend sent me the link to this video after she watched it in a foster-parent training class, and I wanted to share it because I found it to be such a powerful depiction of being in the foster care system from a child’s point of view. . . .

The Bachelor Finale: it’s not okay

March 11, 2014

Sarah and I could have gone on and on about this train wreck of a finale. From the family throwing him under the bus to the women ignoring all the red flags to the tense exchanges between Chris Harrison and Juan Pablo . . . this show was straight-up cringey. And confusing. And a cautionary tale to women about “following your heart” instead of using your brain. ) What did you make of the finale? What do you think Juan Pablo said to Claire? Why was Juan Pablo so pissy with Chris Harrison? And WHAT . . .

Questions of eternal significance: what was your first concert, and what is your dream concert?

March 11, 2014

When I was in DC last month with some friends, we played a game where we went around the table and shared our first concert and our dream concert. The concert we saw first, and the concert we would really love to see. It was really entertaining to hear some of the concerts people saw in their youth . . . quite the stroll down memory lane. It was also fun to hear the bands that people were dying to see. My first concert is a little embarrassing. I’ll give you a hint. I was hangin’ tuff. That’s . . .

My husband, the movie star

March 10, 2014

A few weeks ago I was invited to attend the premiere of House of Card’s second season. I was thrilled, because Mark and I completely binge-watched the first season and I am a fan. So we got all fancied up and headed up to Hollywood for the evening. Something you should know about movie/tv premieres: people get all dressed up and then they sit in regular ole’ theater chairs and watch a movie. That’s the part you don’t see. Yes, there’s the red carpet and the lights and the photographers. And . . .

How I became a Stichfix convert

March 7, 2014

I have been listening to friends fawn over Stichfix for about a year now, and I’ve always been a skeptic. Stichfix is a personal stylist service that allows you to fill out a fairly detailed personal profile, that includes the kind of clothes you like and need, your height and weight, lifestyle information, and the items that you  need. Once a month, they send a box that a stylist chooses for you. I’ve watched my friends get really great stuff but I’ve never wanted to try it myself. I’m . . .

What I want you to know: molestation can happen in plain sight

March 7, 2014

What I Want You to Know is a series of reader submissions. It is an attempt to allow people to tell their personal stories, in the hopes of bringing greater compassion to the unique issues each of us face. If you would like to submit a story to this series, click here. Today’s guest posts is written by Penelope. With all the hail storm brewing around Woody Allen and whether or not he molested Dylan Farrow, what I want you to know is just how easily a child can be molested. One of my earliest . . .

The best satire reviews on Amazon (take 3)

March 5, 2014

A month ago, I listed a whole new set of snarky Amazon reviews, because pretty much they are the best thing ever and totally justify the existence of the Internet in every way. It was so much fun that I’m dipping into that well a third time. Why? Because there are SO many. And because it’s hard to choose. And because: iPad toilet paper stand, y’all. Read the rest here. . . .

Watching the Oscars with children

March 5, 2014

Sunday night, I decided to watch the Oscars before the kids went to bed. This is the first time since having children that I have attempted to watch a show of my own choosing while my children were still awake. It’s like their brains exploded. HOW COULD I BE SO SELFISH. Once they realized that I was not, in fact, going to turn the channel to Disney Junior, they settled in and watched it with me, which provided a lot of hilarious commentary. India had quite a bit to say about the dresses and kept . . .
