A fresh start . . . my nephew talks Invisalign

March 31, 2014

This post was sponsored by Invisalign. My nephew and mom are receiving complimentary Invisalign treatment as they share their Invisalign journey. As I mentioned in a previous post, I’m excited to announce my partnership with Invisalign  this year. In addition to sharing my mom’s journey, I’m also going to be documenting my nephew’s journey with Invisalign. As I mentioned in a previous post, I’m excited to announce my partnership with Invisalign  this year. In addition to sharing my . . .

That’s what SHE said: open adoption, the wisdom of The Smiths, breaking up with Evangelicalism, responding to bullying, and more . . .

March 30, 2014

In Which This Is For The Ones Leaving Evangelicalism | Sarah Bessey Your pet evangelical gate-keeper isn’t the sole arbitrator of the Christian faith: there is more complexity and beauty and diversity of voices and experiences within followers of the Way than you know. Remember, your view of Christians, your personal experience with Christians is rather small sample size: there are a lot more of us out here than you might think. A lot of us on the other side of that faith shift, eschewing . . .

Ford parodies the obnoxious Cadillac commercial and the result is awesome

March 29, 2014

During the Super Bowl, Cadillac aired an obnoxious commercial that basically praised overworking in the pursuit of material wealth. Many people found it distasteful . . .a promotion of consumerism and American elitism.   This week, Ford parodied the commercial, espousing a different set of values. I could not love it more. Here’s the new commercial. Yes. That’s much better, n'est-ce pas? . . .

World Vision, the reversal of inclusion, and the aftermath

March 28, 2014

On Tuesday, I shared about the news of World Vision’s shifted employee policy allowing Christians in same-sex marriages to be on staff with the organization. As an inter-denominational organization, this decision was a bid to promote more unity and to acknowledge that many Christians and churches are affirming of gay marriage. World Vision did not take a stance, but rather opened the door to differing viewpoints, as they have done with any number of doctrinal viewpoints of employees outside the . . .

It’s never too late . . . my mom talks about teeth

March 28, 2014

This post was sponsored by Invisalign. My nephew and mom are receiving complimentary Invisalign treatment as they share their Invisalign journey. I am really excited to announce my partnership with Invisalign this year. I know what an amazing product it is . . . my friend Sarah James is rocking hers and I don’t think you can tell at all in our videos. For those of you who are not familiar with Invisalign, it’s a series of nearly invisible, removable aligners that are used to gradually and . . .

What I want you to know about having a drunk father

March 27, 2014

What I Want You to Know is a series of reader submissions. It is an attempt to allow people to tell their personal stories, in the hopes of bringing greater compassion to the unique issues each of us face. If you would like to submit a story to this series, click here. Today’s guest posts is by an anonymous reader. It's midnight. I'm at the computer while my family sleeps, when suddenly my daughter's cries fill the house. She stumbles down the hall, her hands over her ears. "I can't . . .

Wednesday's Child: Sierra in Dallas

March 26, 2014

I've decided to do a new weekly feature on the blog and share the stories of children from around the country who are waiting for a family. My focus today is Sierra, a cute 7th grader who loves going to church and hopes to be a minister someday. My hope is that this can broaden exposure for the children highlighted, but also serve as a reminder that these children represent thousands of children currently in the foster-care system. Perhaps their stories will inspire you to consider opening your . . .

On World Vision, gay marriage, and taking a stand on the backs of starving children

March 25, 2014

Earlier today, Christianity Today reported on a shift in World Vision’s employment policy in regards to sexual morality. World Vision is a Christian organization dedicated to serving impoverished children, and has always held a pretty rigid code of morality for employees. Specifically, employees are not to engage in sex outside of marriage. But recently, the organization decided that it would not discriminate against professed believers in a legal, same-sex marriage,. World Vision did not take a . . .

Questions of eternal significance: Did you go to your high school reunion?

March 24, 2014

Last week I saw a play called Reunion at South Coast Rep. It was the story of three high school buddies who get together after their high school reunion and rehash the memories, hurts, and relationship dynamics that shaped them. It was a powerful play (local folks, check it out) and it got me thinking about how oddly emotional high school reunions can be. My 20-year-reunion was this past summer. I was a class officer my senior year, which means I’m responsible for planning our reunions . . . . . .
