Late-Night TV Ramblings
I have really bad insomnia. II have always had trouble falling asleep. So I’m constantly up late at night, and I usually end up watching tv. And late-night tv . . . It’s brutal. Infomercials kill me, but what may possibly be worse is the commercials that are really late. At that time of night, the majority of commercials are for Girls Gone Wild videos, phone sex lines, and how to buy things with bad credit. It doesn’t do much for your self-esteem to be in that demographic. Evidently, if . . .
Once Upon a Cupcake
Lately, I've gotten a little obsessed with making cupcakes in an unhealthy, people-pleasing, trying-to-prove-myself kinda way. I find the desire to try to be Martha Stewart rears its ugly head every year right around Christmas, when I start making homemade soap (2001) or kahlua (2004) or body scrubs (2003) or truffles (2008) in an attempt to show everyone how crafty and creative and granola I am.For Jafta's 3rd birthday, I decided to make the cupcakes instead of buying the storebought ones. And . . .
Spiderman gets a boost
Jafta has wanted a spiderman costume since he saw his friend Nate wear one on Halloween. We searched high and low, but just couldn't find one, so we settled on spiderman pajamas. We tried to convince him that it was a costume, but he wasn't buying it. He kept asking about the mask. Yesterday, he found a solution from my bottom drawer . He calls it "spiderman eyes". Um . . . the kid's creative! . . .
Modern Art and Tandem Puking
I had the most mortifying parent experience tonight. My friend, who is an amazing artist, was having a show at a local gallery. The gallery had an opening reception for the artists, and we decided to drop in and take the kids. I was thinking we would just make a quick appearance and leave. My kids are usually pretty good with stuff like that, and I want to expose them to culture, yada yada yada.So we head into the gallery and all is good. I've got India in a "mei tai" carrier and Jafta is being . . .
Scolded for my parenting today
I had the worst experience today. I went grocery shopping with the kids, and thought we would eat lunch in the restaurant attached to the grocery store. It's a health food shop, and their "diner" is a pretty casual setting, so I though it would be okay if I braved it alone with two kids. Well . . .We sat down, and the only available table was squashed between several other tables. Way too close for comfort. Then we waited forever for anyone to wait on us. The kids were really hungry, and acting . . .
A Day in the Life at Family Court
Once again, we drove to the courthouse this morning to find out that there was no hearing. Apparently one of the attorneys was out for the day, and our attorney "forgot" to tell us. It's cool. We love taking time and pay off work, hiring sitters, waking at the crack of dawn, and driving the scenic 710 to Los Angeles a couples times a month. They are most likely going to reschedule for August 9th (Mark's birthday), and we have a trip to Seattle planned for that week. So we'll be biting our nails . . .
FABULOUS, FABULOUS LIVES 2005
Mark and Kristen Howerton’sFABULOUS, FABULOUS LIVES 2005We’ve had a life-changing year this year, and we have been blessed by a new addition to our family that brings us more joy than we ever imagined . . . [1]But let’s start from the beginning. We rang in this year, and my 30th birthday, with a party on New Year’s Eve.[2] A few days later, Mark was back under the knife having the first of two reconstructive surgeries on his leg. He had the second last month – so he started and ended the year on . . .
Mark and Kristen Howerton’s Fabulous Lives 2004
It’s been an interesting year this year. . .[1] We started out our year with another mission trip to Africa. We returned to the same place in Zimbabwe – a small rural village in the center of the country that has been hit hard by AIDS, famine, and unemployment. It was great to return to the same place and see so many familiar faces, and it fueled our passion for Africa. Shortly after returning from Africa, Mark pulled his biggest attention-seeking stunt to date by getting hit by a car on the . . .
Animal Husbandry
My husband went grocery shopping by himself yesterday, for the first time in our eight year marriage. I don't know if that says something about the state our house is in - he must have been pretty desperate to to an actual errand without being prompted. I have been a little busy. So I was overjoyed to hear that I could cross that chore off my list. . . until I got home, and took a little inventory of what had been purchased. My husband's solo jaunt to the grocery store yielded the . . .
“Fabulous, Fabulous Christmas Letter” 2002
Mark and Kristen Howerton’s “Fabulous, Fabulous Christmas Letter” 2002 Dear friends, Well, it’s that time of year again, and so much has happened since last year that it’s hard to know where to begin.[1] We’ve got lots of exciting accomplishments to share in this year’s “Fabulous, Fabulous Christmas LetterÓ” 2002.[2] Our first bit of news is that we bought a house! Our new house is a brand-new seven bedroom mansion overlooking the shores of Newport Beach.[3] Alright, in actuality, we bought a . . .
