On this episode of Mama Said, Sarah James and I talk about their kids' obsession with pop music and what they do when some of those songs have unsavory lyrics. From profanity to sexy lyrics, how do you edit your kids' playlist? . . .
Dishing on Downton Season 4 Episode 4
You guys, we cannot even with Downton this season. We’re bored! We’re bored by the plot, we’re bored by the characters, we’re bored doing the recaps. And yet, here we are. At least we’ve got a little forbidden romance in this episode to spice things up. Meanwhile, we psychoanalyze Mary and wonder why Gregson didn’t call Edith in the morning. What did you think of this week’s episode? Am I the only one who thinks that Tom could be just the thing Mary needs? . . .
What I want you to know about my husband’s addiction to pain pills
What I Want You to Know is a series of reader submissions. It is an attempt to allow people to tell their personal stories, in the hopes of bringing greater compassion to the unique issues each of us face. If you would like to submit a story to this series, click here. Today’s guest posts is by MMS. I want you to know my husband did not set out to become an addict. He thought he was doing the right thing. He was experiencing severe knee pain, so he went to his primary care doctor. . . .
The Bachelor Recap: Season 18 (Juan Pablo) Episode 4
Sarah James and I are back with our latest Bachelor recap. Is JPab looking for a wife or a clubbing partner? Is Sharleen a bigger ice queen than Elsa? Will we ever be able to tell the difference between all these indiscernible blonde girls? Does Juan Pablo make out with someone after she throws up in her mouth? (Spoiler alert: he does.) Who do you think should win Juan Pablo’s final rose? . . .
Questions of eternal significance: what would you want for your last meal?
This is one of those questions that is a bit inconsequential since most of us won't know in advance of the day of our death . . . but let's just pretend for the fun of it. If you knew the end was near and could have anything you wanted, what would your meal be? I know it sounds silly to choose a salad, but the apple gouda salad at Mesa is one of my favorite dishes on the planet. But I'd pair it with a CPK Thai chicken pizza because it's my last meal and GLUTEN. I'd finish it off with the . . .
All the birth control you’ve ever needed in six pictures of ponytails
Let me break down parenting for you, and why it's so hard. Before you have kids, you think it's the diapers or the late nights or the mortification of trading in your car for a minivan. But really, it's the mind games. It's the daily, hourly micro-aggressions involved in living with totally volatile and irrational people. It's the gray matter that gets lost each day when you try to reason with the unreasonable. It's the tax on your brain of trying to keep your cool when they lose . . .
Best new movies on Netflix this year
Netflix made news at the beginning of the year by announcing that, due to expired licensing agreements, it had purged a number of its popular movies available for streaming. If you haven’t yet watched films likeTitanic, Top Gun, or Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind…you’re out of luck. Don’t worry, though. For every now-unavailable Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo, there are several more great movies that have been added to the streaming queue as of this month. I looked through this list of the . . .
Mama Said: New Year’s Resolutions
On this episode of Mama Said, Sarah James and I talk about their New Year's resolutions, and the struggle to stay motivated to keep year-long goals. Did you make resolutions this year? What were they? . . .
A friendly little competition to get healthy
I’m not doing official resolutions this year, because I’m tired of setting myself up to fail. But I am wanting to get back into shape after a back injury knocked me down last fall. It’s been insane how quickly I lost my endurance. I am truly in the worst shape of my life right now, and it’s really hard getting back into the swing of things when you get winded after 10 minutes of exercise. But I need to push through, and I also need to start taking my diet more seriously. I am really effected by . . .
The Bachelor Recap: Episode 4
Once again Sarah James and I are recapping our guilty pleasure, our shame made even more complete by JPab’s completely ridiculous comments about the possibility of a gay bachelor. I like Kristy’s take: This episode was full of the usual . . . girls in bikinis, people jumping off yachts, and waxing philosophical about the trust and bond that occurs after bungee jumping together. What did you think of this episode? And how do you think Juan Pablo should take accountability for his offensive . . .
