Snapchat, Dim Sum and Open Adoption
The following is a guest post by Kristan Cassady, Kristan and her partner Nichole are a queer Bay Area couple adopting from foster care. They are the subjects in the series THE F WORD., a very personal and sometimes funny look at what it means to adopt a kid in the foster care system. (Check out it out here.) Most mornings, I wake up to J’s tiny fingers trying to pry my eyes open. “Mama,” He’ll say, “Didas, pease.” At this point, I do my best to open my eyes on my own and make my way . . .

On Thursdays I post from the vault. This post is from March 2009. I got to “chat” with Mark on facebook for a while tonight. He sent me this picture of the two boys together: Jafta is still running a fever in the evenings and his asthma is giving him trouble. Luckily I forced Mark to pack the nebulizer, just in case. Mark said he was fine during the day today, and then just got sick again when they got home. Keanan is getting better but still pretty quiet and not his usual active . . .

Every Wednesday I feature a child recently highlighted by a local Wednesday's Child newscast to share the stories of children from around the country who are waiting for a family. My hope is that this can broaden exposure for the children highlighted, but also serve as a reminder that these children represent thousands of children currently in the foster-care system. Life Lately
Pirate girls change the world. Was talking with a friend yesterday about how you shouldn’t type your kids but I’m super sure Kembe is a 7 and she said “oh, you mean the way he walks through the school and every single kid knows him?” Yep. It’s true. He has the brightest and kindest spirit, has never met a stranger, and walks through the school high-fiving the younger kids. “He’s always so happy” is the most common comment I get about him. (Okay, maybe about his height, too.) He’s the kid . . .

The young poet’s society || On Thursdays I post from the vault. This post is from February 2009.
On Thursdays I post from the vault. This post is from February 2009. I loved this collection of classic stories, and recently as I was going through my books, I rediscovered it and thought it would be great to introduce it to my kids. We have started reading portions of it to the kids at night, and at mealtimes. I could go on . . .
