The White Princess: the quiet politics of the women behind those in power
This post is sponsored by The White Princess, a Starz original series There is a new series hitting Starz this week called The White Princess. Drawn from the novel series by Phlippa Greogry (author of The Red Queen and The White Queen) it follows the life of Elizabeth of York, a princess who was forced into marriage with the Tudor Henry VII, in an effort to unify the longstanding feud between their powerful families. The catch: Elizabeth was in love with Richad . . .
TBT: This is how we do it.
On Thursdays I post from the vault. This post is from March 2010. Yesterday was not my best day. It started when Mark dropped Jafta off at school. He’s been complaining about one of his classmates being mean to him. He comes home talking about it quite a bit – saying that he’s getting hit and kicked and made fun of. Jafta can be dramatic and overly sensitive, and he can also be antagonistic, so we weren’t sure how much of this to believe. We talked to the teacher about it, and she basically . . .

Wednesday’s Child: Anjal, Makaio, and Eli
Every Wednesday I feature a child recently highlighted by a local Wednesday's Child newscast to share the stories of children from around the country who are waiting for a family. My hope is that this can broaden exposure for the children highlighted, but also serve as a reminder that these children represent thousands of children currently in the foster-care system. Perhaps their stories will inspire you to consider opening your home to a child needing a family. For more information and to . . .
That’s what SHE said: Lots and lots of tips for everything from saving money on take-out to getting better sleep, removing ticks to helping protect your kids from abuse
Here are some things I read this week that made me think. (These are just snippets - click on the title to read the whole thing.) My Smartest Tip for Saving Money on Takeout from Lisa at The Kitchn "My husband and I rely on takeout more often than I'd like to admit. If I haven't had the time to meal plan (or grocery shop) for the week, chances are, we're having cereal or takeout for dinner. One of those things can be inexpensive (two boxes for $5? Yes, please!), while the other can add up — . . .

Three new children’s books featuring a black female protagonist
I want to point you to three incredible children's books I just discovered. They all have inspiring messages, and they all feature a little black girl as the main character. Children's books with girls as the main character (in non-princess roles) are woefully under-represented, and books with black girls as the main character are like a unicorn. So I'm thrilled about these new books. (For full disclosure, Matthew and Denene are also personal friends and two people I really like a lot). If you . . .
