A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words
I might have mentioned that we are still afflicted with a "touch of the Haiti", manifesting as some gastro-intestinal issues. I remain commited to not talking about poop on my blog (as I have done here, here, here, and here.) So, I will leave it to you to decipher what I am supposed to do with this little goodie bag I got from Urgent Care today, that I get to return to them tomorrow. Hint: those are not pill bottles. . . .
The Lazy Mom’s Oprah Burger
Last week Oprah raved about a certain turkey burger from The Donald's high-end restaurant Mira-Lago. It sounded so good, but also kind of complicated. Orpah's version is here. Well, leave it to me to find an even easier way to make this that involves very little prep. Laziness is a spiritual gift. 1 cup Healthy Harvest organic Granny Smith applesauce (no chopping required) 1 cup Trader Joes chopped onions (again, no chopping required) 1 lb ground turkey breast 2 Tbsp. salt 1 Tbsp. black . . .
Now I Have Seen It All
I wrote a few days ago about how we are all still suffering from some lingering gastro-intestinal issues after our Haiti trip. I remain committed to not discussing poop on my blog, but suffice it to say that my family is single-handedly keeping Immodium Chewables in business right now. Anyways, I was joking with Mark last night about how bad I was feeling. I wish that if I was gonna get sick with some foreign parasite, it would be the kind that made me lose lots of weight. I mean, if I'm . . .
Bring Back That Lovin’ Feeling
I have a secret to tell you. Are you ready? I'm going to whisper it so no one else hears. I'm a little embarrased about it, so I'm saying it really quietly. You ready? Okay, here goes: Some days I don't really like my kids. It feels awful and evil to say that, but it's true. Kids can sometimes behave in ways that are, frankly, kind of hard to love. And yet, we continue to love them, because that's what a parent does. The unconditional love from a parent to a child is able to . . .
For The Record
AN OPEN LETTER TO JAFTA HOWERTON My dearest son, I need to clear something up. When you are older and we look back on pictures from this time in our lives, I don't want you wondering why there are 100 pictures of India for every 1 picture of you. If that is the case, it is not because I love your sister more. It is because this is what happens when I try to take your picture: Just for the record. Love, Mom . . .
On Being the Shrink
I don't talk about my job very much. As a therapist, I have to keep everything that happens in session confidential. When most people have a bad day at the office, they can vent about it to their spouse or friends. When I have a bad day at work, I have to keep it to myself. Today I had a poignant conversation with another therapist about some stuff that I obviously can't discuss. But the gist of it is, sometimes it can be really discouraging to see how damaging parents can be to their children. . . .
No Greater Joy
There is nothing greater as a parent than seeing your kids love on each other. I love how Jafta loves India . . . . . .
Jafta’s Adoption is Final . . . . Finally!
After three years, the courts upheld what we have been praying for the last three years - Jafta is an official member of our family. It was an incredible day. I can't explain how surreal it was to drive up to the LA family court knowing that we were going there to finalize the adoption. We have made that trip so many times in the last three years, and every time it has been a feeling of dread and anxiety as other people made decisions about our son's future. On our way there, I realized it was . . .
Fun with Wig Caps
We used to use a wig cap to hold Jafta's dreads in place. Now that we don't need them any more, the kids found a new thing to play with. . . .
we be illin’
We all have a bit of a lingering bug. We are calling it a "touch of the Haiti". All of it us are just a little off. I have taken a two hour nap both today and yesterday, which is VERY unusual for me. The kids are having frequent meltdowns. We have been watching a lot of tv, because I am just so tired. There is something else going on, that I am hesistant to mention. You see, the other day, I saw my blog posted on another blog. There is an application that gives a "snapshot" of blogs if you . . .
