Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas

December 25, 2008

Hope yours is great!! We had a fun morning doing Christmas as our family. Here is a little video of the discovery. Please enjoy Jafta's "kicks of joy" as he sees the toys. We just got a few toys, but the one WE were most excited about was this keyboard/mixing table from V-Tech. Mark was "testing it out" last night while we set up the toys. For about a half hour he pretended to be Fatboy slim. You know, just to make sure it works and all. I mean, sitting there playing with your own kids' toys is . . .

Tradition

December 25, 2008

For the last seven years, we've had a Christmas Eve breakfast with the same 4 couples. It has become a tradition I look forward to every year, especially as more and more kids are added to the mix (which means less and less time to hang out together). Here are some photos from today, and a flashback from several years ago. We totally look the same. Right? RIGHT???? . . .

The Howerton’s Fabulous, Fabulous Lives© 2008

December 24, 2008

Merry Christmas! [1]The kids are finally in bed after a full day of building snowmen and delivering toys to needy children. We sang a rousing medley of traditional Christmas hymns gathered around our grand piano, before having each child quote Luke 2 from memory.[2]I am now cuddled by the fire, while Mark hovers over me, watching me drift into sleep. His cold, pale skin is offset by his sinuous muscles and amber eyes, and he whispers to me in a voice as smooth as silk, while the electricity of . . .

This Just Makes Me Want to Strangle Some Balls

December 23, 2008

It's almost Christmas, and yet I'm still ranting on my blog. I know, I know. I should be posting a recipe or sharing a holiday craft or writing about something involving festivity and merriment instead of unloading about all the injustices in the world. But I just can't help myself.I tried to move on after yesterday's post. The kids were with grandma for the night, and I am still fighting a bug, so I curled up early on the sofa and found nothing on the Tivo but children's movies. So I did . . .

BLACK DOLLS: special order only

December 23, 2008

Some days, I think we are living in a new era, in a world that doesn't see color, in a world more and more like the one Martin Luther King dreamt about. And some days, I remember that we're not. There were a myriad of reminders about this for me today, most of which I can't really disclose on my blog. Let me just say this: in therapy, the filter comes off. And some people say stuff to me having no idea that I have an African American son. (or that I would be completely offended even if I didn't). . . .

The Amazing Generosity of Starbucks

December 21, 2008

I'm all for companies giving back. In fact, I wrote about a whole list of great companies who are making a difference in the world. I was excited to hear that Starbucks would be giving back this year, too.I headed down to my local coffee conglomerate and ordered one of the new (RED) drinks, and found a curious little economic equation. The (RED) latte costs $3.40. A regular flavored-shot latte costs $3.00. So . . . just to be clear. If I pay an extra 40 cents for a special latte, Starbucks will . . .

The Christmas Letter

December 19, 2008

One of the things I love the most about the Christmas season is getting all of the Christmas cards in the mail. I love catching up with friends this way, seeing photos of everyone's growing families, and reading about what everyone is up to. Over the years, I have heard a few people mock the tradition of Christmas letters, wondering who really reads them. Um, I do. I read every one of them. I love them. I've always been a fan of mail correpsondence, and took my pen-palling VERY seriously growing . . .

A Day of Christmas Miracles

December 19, 2008

Just after Thanksgiving, every year without fail, I start a little holiday tradition of my own. Anything good that happens, I deem to be a "Christmas Miracle". I just crack myself up with this one for the whole month of December. It never gets old. Right Mark?So last weekend was a weekend of miracles. In an attempt to be the kind of parents who expose their children to more than IKEA and Target, we braved a one of those community events that brings people out in droves. It was a snow day hosted . . .
