Mama Said: Coping with insomnia (and some questions about medical marijuana)
This month on Mama Said, Sarah and I are talking about our struggles with insomnia . . . what we’ve tried, what works, and what doesn’t: We also talk about medical marijuana, which has been suggested to both of us but we’re ambivalent about: Have you ever struggled with insomnia? How did you cope? And would you ever consider medical marijuana? . . .

Mark’s 40th birthday
Last weekend we celebrated Mark’s 40th birthday. 40! Man, that feels weird to say. Every year we spend Mark’s birthday out in the desert with some friends. We’ve been doing this since before we had kids and its such a fun tradition – and now our kids look forward to it as much as the adults. “Things being on fire” seemed to be the theme of the weekend. There was a huge wildfire on our way out. And read on . . . there was more fire excitement at the resort. The kids think the luggage cart is a . . .
Questions of eternal significance: do you keep your nails painted?
Okay, today’s question is completely superfluous (hastag first world problems), but I want to know: do you keep your nails painted or rock them au naturale? Doing my nails has always been one of the grooming habits that totally confounds me. I have nails that grow very fast. I’m sure the grass is always greener and that many women would love nails that grow quickly, but I find it totally annoying. I would love to have short nails that I can just paint with a dark, funky color, but within a week . . .

The mystery of the magical apple tree
When we first moved into our new house last fall, we noted that there were three fruit trees in the backyard: a lemon tree, an orange tree, and an apple tree. The previous owner, who lived here for many years, warned us that the apple tree did not produce edible fruit. She said that she had never known it to bear good fruit in all the years she’d been here – the apples were small and hard, and very sour. No one ever ate them. Of course, we decided to try them ourselves but we had to agree . . . . . .

Worst End Of Summer Mom Ever: A Sequel | Jen Hatmaker Sixteen hours a day for infinity days without the helpful scaffolding of school or clubs or teams has pushed me to the point where I recently told my children: “I’m so sorry. If you cannot make a sandwich or solve this particular problem, whatever it is that your moving mouths are trying to . . .
