Questions of eternal significance: what is your favorite cocktail?
We are talking cocktails today, even though at my ripe old age of 39, I'm finding it more and more difficult to indulge in even one drink without feeling horrible the next day. What is the deal with that?I'm not a big wine drinker. I know it's more sophisticated and I've tried to develop a better palate, but the truth is, my personal preference is always a girly cocktail over a glass of wine. I like sweet drinks, but not too sweet, and if there is some fruit and some kind of herb involve, even . . .
How we do St. Patrick’s Day
This is how we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. A $3 box of cereal. Green shirts. The end. You can pin that if you want to. (Last St. Patrick’s Day the fever pitch of craft ideas online paired with my children’s unrelenting grief over our lack of a leprechaun trap spurred me to write this little screed, which became the most-shared post on my blog.) I hope you are enjoying your day, no matter how you do it! . . .
Urban vs. Suburban: figuring out where to plant roots
The post was sponsored by Trulia, but the dilemma about where to settle down is all my own. Over the past ten years, I’ve had a growing sense of discontent about the neighborhood we live in. It’s a fine neighborhood by all accounts. We’ve lived here for 10 years now (our new house is just around the corner from our previous home). We’ve gotten to know our neighbors and the kids are happy enough. But there are some aspects about it that concern me as well. Our current neighborhood is situated in . . .

That’s what SHE said: orphan t-shirts, insidious quotes, emasculating dudes, and more . . .
Please Reconsider That [Orphan] T-Shirt | Tara Vanderwoude Then add the presence of one of the t-shirts, pushing him into the spotlight further and without his consent, and it screams, “THIS KID WAS AN ORPHAN!” It makes the child, even if unintentionally, the poster child for international adoption or for orphan care. Yes, the child instantly becomes an advertisement for adoption. Top Easiest Ways To Emasculate A Dude (And Rule The World) I don’t think anyone should be emasculating anyone . . .
What it feels like to be a foster child
A friend sent me the link to this video after she watched it in a foster-parent training class, and I wanted to share it because I found it to be such a powerful depiction of being in the foster care system from a child’s point of view. . . .

The Bachelor Finale: it’s not okay
Sarah and I could have gone on and on about this train wreck of a finale. From the family throwing him under the bus to the women ignoring all the red flags to the tense exchanges between Chris Harrison and Juan Pablo . . . this show was straight-up cringey. And confusing. And a cautionary tale to women about “following your heart” instead of using your brain. ) What did you make of the finale? What do you think Juan Pablo said to Claire? Why was Juan Pablo so pissy with Chris Harrison? And WHAT . . .
Questions of eternal significance: what was your first concert, and what is your dream concert?
When I was in DC last month with some friends, we played a game where we went around the table and shared our first concert and our dream concert. The concert we saw first, and the concert we would really love to see. It was really entertaining to hear some of the concerts people saw in their youth . . . quite the stroll down memory lane. It was also fun to hear the bands that people were dying to see. My first concert is a little embarrassing. I’ll give you a hint. I was hangin’ tuff. That’s . . .
My husband, the movie star
A few weeks ago I was invited to attend the premiere of House of Card’s second season. I was thrilled, because Mark and I completely binge-watched the first season and I am a fan. So we got all fancied up and headed up to Hollywood for the evening. Something you should know about movie/tv premieres: people get all dressed up and then they sit in regular ole’ theater chairs and watch a movie. That’s the part you don’t see. Yes, there’s the red carpet and the lights and the photographers. And . . .
