Questions of eternal significance: Wii vs. XBOX?

September 4, 2013

Several months back I asked this question and most people suggested we start with a Wii since the games are more geared to kids. We bought a used Wii system from some friends and we’ve been using it a lot. I’ve limited our usage thus far to Just Dance, Guitar Hero, Wii Sports and Wii Fit. I know there are some other great games for kids but I’ve been trying to avoid the games that use the joystick because I think they will favor them over the more active games, and they are pretty enthusiastic . . .

Let’s talk about the Downton Abbey trailer

September 3, 2013

Well, folks, the Downtwon Abbey trailer just dropped . . . a cruel preview to the show that we Americans will have to wait months for before it comes to PBS. (Or at least you suckers will because you KNOW I’ll be getting all McGyver so I can watch it when the Brits do.) It’s possible that I watched this four times in a row, and then once again, stopping at every frame. Who are all these people kissing? Why is Bates sad?Is there an inter-racial romance? Is Mary moving on? WILL SOMEONE HAVE A BABY . . .

Back to school 2013

September 3, 2013

Confession: I took these pictures a few days before the first day of school. Every year I see mothers posting these cute pictures of their kids marking what grade they are in, and every year I think I want to do this myself and fail. I fail because I fail at mornings in general, but also because the first day of school is always so generally hectic and a shock to our lazy summer system. So this year, I decided I would capture a photo of them on a day we had nothing going on. I put them all in . . .

Two prayers for Labor Day

September 2, 2013

Yesterday our church led the congregation in two prayers for Labor Day. I will be honest – I have never given a lot of thought to Labor Day, and I’ve certainly never thought of it in a Christian framework. But I appreciated these prayers, and the way they made me contemplate justice as it pertains to labor issues. I thought you might appreciate them too. A Prayer for Labor Sunday God, help us to build a new world in the midst of the old. A world where all worker are valued. A world where those . . .

Labor Day = Talk To Your Kids About Sex Day

September 2, 2013

Some of my kids are getting to an age where we need to have “the sex talk”.  Mark and I have been strategizing how to do this, because it’s a really big value for us that a) our kids get their sex education from us first, and b) our kids feel comfortable coming to us with any questions or concerns about sex. We also feel really strongly that the “sex talk” should not be a one-time thing but rather an ongoing conversation, because kids need to know different things at different developmental . . .

This Is My Body, Sacred And Scarred | Five Kids Is A Lot Of Kids When I see myself in the mirror now, I think, almost always, “This is my body, broken for you, kids.” Which isn’t sacrilegious. Or self-deprecating. Or disdainful. Or sad. Not now. Not anymore. No. Because the broken body points always toward life. Always toward triumph. Always toward resurrection. It just took me a while to find the sacred in the scars Facebook Slacktivism - False Sense Of Help | HowToBeaDad Don’t put a . . .

DIY personalized bento lunchbox

August 29, 2013

I’ve been wanting to give the bento box concept another go. We had some a few years ago, and while I loved the idea of reducing waste with it, the kind I bought kept falling open in their backpacks. I’ve heard great things about the Goodbyn Bynto brand so when I saw some on Amazon for $9 I snatched them up. While we were pursuing the dollar aisle at Target, as we always do, India found a cell phone bling packet and had the idea to use it as decoration on her new lunch box. I thought it was a . . .
