What I want you to know about having a child with brain cancer

September 10, 2013

What I Want You to Know is a series of reader submissions. If you would like to submit a story to this series, click here. Today’s guest posts is by Audra, Max's Momma. August 5th, 2011 is a painful anniversary. On that day our four-year-old son, Max, was diagnosed with brain cancer. My family was thrown into a new world. In this story . . .

On respect, responsibility, and Mrs. Hall’s open letter to teenaged girls

September 9, 2013

Last week I saw dozens of people linking to a post written as an open letter to teen girls from the mom of several boys. Almost as quickly as that post went viral, the backlash hit. It seems like the post struck a nerve – some feeling like it expressed their very own thoughts, and others feeling like the message was problematic. I am in the latter camp, and my first reaction was to write a snarky post . . . my own open letter back . . . maybe some satire to skewer what I felt to be a . . .

What People Really Look Like (From The Point Of View Of A Massage Therapist) Let’s start here with what nobody looks like: nobody looks like the people in magazines or movies. Not even models. Nobody. Lean people have a kind of rawboned, unfinished look about them that is very appealing. But they don’t have plump round breasts and plump round asses. You have plump round breasts and a plump round ass, you have a plump round belly and plump round thighs as well. That’s how it works. (And that’s . . .

The 6 kinds of parents teachers appreciate

September 7, 2013

I’ve written before about what kind of school parent I am, and in an episode of Mama Said, Sarah and I discussed my ambivalence about volunteering in their classrooms. Short story, I think a lot about what my kids’ teachers think of me. When I discuss my own parenting style with them—including teachers in my social circles—I keep hearing a lot of similar things: That it’s a collaboration. Parents and teachers have to work together as a team to help our kids reach their potential. So I’ve been . . .

September 6, 2013

If you would like to submit a story to this series, click here. Today’s guest posts is by Rachel Garlinghouse. My girls are real sisters. Really. Both of my children came to my husband and me through domestic, transracial, open adoption. (Whew! What a mouthful!) We . . .

DIY swimsuit drying rack

September 6, 2013

This little hack for drying swimsuits may seem like a no-brainer, but the concept eluded me until this summer. We used to throw wet swimsuits over the shower curtain rod, which meant that the suits dripped into the bath but also out onto the floor. The other issue with this technique is that the kids could not reach their own swimsuits,  and since they were in and out of their suits all summer it became frustrating for all of us that they required assistance to retrieve their suit.  A . . .

Easy bento lunch ideas

September 6, 2013

The kids are back n school and we are giving the Bento boxes a go. So far so good. It’s funny how a small change like a new lunchbox can make packing the lunches easer to bear. I love how easy these are to pack. No more ziplocs, containers, etc. Here are a few of our lunches from the past week:   India is my picky eat. She got a turkey sandwich on sourdough, hummus and carrots, almonds, and an orange.     Karis got a peanut-butter sandwich, blueberries and almonds (her favorite . . .

iphone photo dump: random summer assortment

September 5, 2013

Here are all of the photos that were on my laptop that crashed mid-summer. Thanks, computer repair guy!     The girls and I dipped our toes in the waters of hair crimping this summer. So 80’s!   Earlier this summer I spoke at Fish Fest – a big stadium concert.     I think this was the biggest crowd I’ve ever spoken to. I did not puke. Success.   Just hanging out in a storm drain. Karis wanted me to cut her camp tee the way I’d . . .
