Mark’s 40th birthday

August 21, 2013

Last weekend we celebrated Mark’s 40th birthday. 40! Man, that feels weird to say. Every year we spend Mark’s birthday out in the desert with some friends. We’ve been doing this since before we had kids and its such a fun tradition – and now our kids look forward to it as much as the adults. “Things being on fire” seemed to be the theme of the weekend. There was a huge wildfire on our way out. And read on . . . there was more fire excitement at the resort. The kids think the luggage cart is a . . .

Questions of eternal significance: do you keep your nails painted?

August 20, 2013

Okay, today’s question is completely superfluous (hastag first world problems), but I want to know: do you keep your nails painted or rock them au naturale? Doing my nails has always been one of the grooming habits that totally confounds me. I have nails that grow very fast. I’m sure the grass is always greener and that many women would love nails that grow quickly, but I find it totally annoying. I would love to have short nails that I can just paint with a dark, funky color, but within a week . . .

The mystery of the magical apple tree

August 19, 2013

When we first moved into our new house last fall, we noted that there were three fruit trees in the backyard: a lemon tree, an orange tree, and an apple tree. The previous owner, who lived here for many years, warned us that the apple tree did not produce edible fruit. She said that she had never known it to bear good fruit in all the years she’d been here – the apples were small and hard, and very sour. No one ever ate them. Of course, we decided to try them ourselves but we had to agree . . . . . .

Worst End Of Summer Mom Ever: A Sequel | Jen Hatmaker Sixteen hours a day for infinity days without the helpful scaffolding of school or clubs or teams has pushed me to the point where I recently told my children: “I’m so sorry. I see your mouths moving but all I can hear is BLAH BLAH BLAH. Your needs are probably real, but I am unable to attend to them at this time. If you cannot make a sandwich or solve this particular problem, whatever it is that your moving mouths are trying to . . .

Would you ever move abroad?

August 16, 2013

This month, Sarah and I shot our Mama Said videos while on vacation. This topic came up after a wine-fueled conversation we had with our husbands the prior night about our dreams to move abroad. We had all but planned our move to Barcelona by the wee hours of the morning. Have you ever thought about moving abroad? What keeps you from doing it? Where do you dream of going? . . .

Family Dinner Traditions: The manners candle

August 16, 2013

Today is the last post in a series about mealtime traditions. With four young kids, mealtime behavior can be a challenge. At any given meal, it’s likely that Karis is having a meltdown over her bowl being the wrong color. Kembe and Jafta are likely kicking each other under the table.  India is probably crying, LOUDLY, because a vegetable was placed on her plate.  Jafta is probably overstuffing his mouth like he’s a contestant on Survivor.  Kembe is likely bouncing in his chair and . . .
