That’s what SHE said: bad moms and link bait, getting the nails dirty, habits of happy folk, cell phones as nihilism, and more . . .

September 23, 2013

Writing About Fashion Week Has Made Me Feel Like Shit About Myself I know women come in every shape and size, and it’s all good, but it is HARD to look exclusively at pictures of very thin women and not start to feel a little like shit. And not to open a whole ‘nother can of worms, but women of color have the added bonus of seeing the unrelenting whiteness on many of the runways, and that’s an even more depressing and infuriating issue. I get all the reasons the models are supposed to be . . .

Mid-September photo dump

September 20, 2013

It is as hot as it has been all summer right now, so we are refusing to believe it is over.     We just discovered a local yoga studio that has classes for kids. The family that poses together . . .   Jafta got to try a maple bacon choolate bar this week. Predictably, he loved it.   I ordered the kids’ Halloween costumes a month early from Zulily, because I was paranoid I would forget later.     We’ve been attempting to learn djembe drums via YouTube. It’s . . .

Differentiating autism from SPD or attachment issues in adopted children

September 19, 2013

When I talk to other adoptive moms, especially those who have adopted kids from hard circumstances, I often hear concerns about autism. It’s a familiar concern to me because one of my kids raised a lot of red flags in regards to autism symptoms. When my oldest was about two, I was beginning to have real concerns about his development.  He had a hard time making eye contact at close range.  He was always crashing into things, touching things, invading the space of others, etc.  He . . .

BEFORE & AFTER: converting our garage into an office/playroom

September 18, 2013

It’s been several months since we moved into our new house but we have just finally finished converting the garage into an office/playroom. I have been working for home for 7 years now and this is the first time I’ve ever had a dedicated office space. Sure, it’s technically the garage . . . but home prices in Southern California are at a premium, which means that we have to use every square inch of space that we’ve got. Here is a quick look at what it looked like before, and how it looks . . .

Krochet Kids Children’s Collection

September 17, 2013

This past weekend, I helped host a party with Krochet Kids to celebrate the launch of their new children’s line. I was able to invite some of my favorite bloggers to come and hear about their mission. I’ve long been a fan of Krochet Kids (we got to visit their headquarters in Peru last Thanksgiving) and I love the way they empower women with job skills and a good wage.  I also love the way their hats hide when I haven’t washed my hair. During the party the kids got passports and . . .
