Mama Said: tv obsessions and stylish celebrity moms
Sarah James and I are keeping it completely shallow this month in our Mama Said videos. Our month of celebrity fluff continued after our hard-hitting look at celebrity crushes. Next, we turned our focus to the important topic of reality television. Specifically: what shows we are currently obsessed with. Then we turned our attention to the even more groundbreaking issue of celebrity style, sharing which celebrity moms we feel have the best fashion sense. P.S. You can watch our recap . . .
Yogurt and kale popsicles
Getting my kids to eat their veggies is always a challenge, and recently I tried a new treat that did the trick. In fact, it worked so well that I"m still pinching myself a little bit, because all four of my kids just downed a hefty serving of kale. Willingly. Oh happy day! I know, I know. The thought of "kale pops" makes me shudder, too. But the creamy yogurt and sweet fruit really masked the veggies well. I’ve got the recipe up at Babble today. . . .
Mama Said: What celebrity crushes are on your “list”?
Sarah James and I decided to keep it completely shallow this month in our Mama Said videos. After discussing topics like guilt and introversion and social anxiety, we decided to do a whole month dedicated to fluff. Specifically: celebrity fluff. In our first video, we discussed our “lists”. (You know . . . the list of celebrities you get a free pass with, in case the opportunity should ever arise.) Watching this video made me laugh because our answers illustrated our own individual . . .
Best books for adoptive parents
One of the most common requests I get from other adoptive parents are recommendations for books to read on adoptive parenting. Last month I curated a list of books for people who are considering adoption over at Babble. Ths month I’ve created a similar list for parents who have already adopted. Check out my blog at Babble to see some of my favorite books about adoptive parenting. Next month, I will curate a list specific to transracial adoption. What are some of your favorite . . .
Must-have items for frequent travel
I’ve been traveling quite a bit for work over the past year. My trips are usually pretty short (about 2-3 days on average) so I’ve been slowly learning how to pack more efficiently, and what items can make the whole process a bit more peaceful. From the scarcity of healthy food on planes to the dilemma of hotel breakfasts, from juggling your carry-ons in the airport to remembering what to pack . . . I’ve compiled my best tips for travel over at Babble.com. . . .
Best books for a lively book club discussion
I’ve been in the same book club for nearly ten years now. It’s a pretty diverse group of women but we have one thing in common: we love to read. One Sunday a month we gather at the host’s house and discuss the themes, character, and merits of a different book. But after the discussion is over, we spend almost as much time choosing our next book. We come armed with literary magazines, Amazon links, and recommendations for friends, and usually have about 10-12 books in consideration at . . .
On lying to my children
In our last episode of Mama Said over at Babble, Sarah and I are confessing the lies we tell to our children. Some of mine have to do with balloons, and my stabby hate of them. How about you? Do you ever lie to your kids? . . .
Reading Recommendations for Prospective Adoptive Parents
One of the most common questions I get from people who are considering adoption are recommendations for books to read as they start their journey. I thought it might be helpful to curate such a list that I could use to refer people to when they are seeking answers. Here are some great books to read as you begin the process. Adopt Without Debt: Creative Ways to Cover the Cost of Adoption Expanded Edition This book is an excellent guide for anyone who has wondered how on . . .
the best reads of 2012
As we start the new year, I thought I would share the best books I read in 2012. Some are new and some are older, but all of them were really enjoyable and engaging books. Gone Girl: A Novel This was probably the most-talked-about book of 2012 and for good reason – it’s an engaging mystery written with a razor-sharp wit. It will keep you up at night, turning pages until you come to the surprising truth about the girl who vanished. Angle of Repose (Penguin Twentieth-Century . . .
