This month on Mama Said, Sarah James and I are taking questions from readers. One reader asked: Do you spend time with each kid individually? We talk about the challenges of making special alone time with each child. . . .
Tips for keeping your sanity this Halloween
I have mixed feelings about Halloween, from the inappropriate adult costumes to the overly sexy costumes for little children to the child labor used in the commercial candy industry. My kids tend to eat too much sugar, starting at school and extending into the evening, which means they are hyper and grumpy. And don’t even get me started on the Halloween Hangover the next day, which often falls on a school day. That said, kids love Halloween. My children’s friends love Halloween. My neighbors—if . . .

Sexy costumes for little girls: a Halloween hall of shame
Much has been written about the disturbing trend of overly-sexualized Halloween costumes. It seems like each year, it’s impossible to find an adult costume for women that hasn’t been “sluttified.” But the trend seems to be trickling down, and as my girls are getting older I’m troubled by the costume choices available to them. Over at Babble, I’ve cataloged the worst offenders. You can read the rest here. . . .
Should adoptive parents change their children’s ethnic given names to avoid prejudice later in life?
Several recent news stories have shed light on an unfortunate xenophobia in regards to names and employment. Earlier this year, the Freakonomics podcast report that there is evidence that a name can influence how a child performs in school and even her career opportunities. More recently, a NY Times blogger shared her discovery that typing in traditionally Black-sounding names yielded a google image search of mugshots, which did not repeat when she searched for images related to more . . .
Tolerable table games with young kids
Figuring out how to play games with my kids has been a chore, because the variance in age ranges has always meant that I had enthusiastic older kids wanting to play, and not-quite-mature-enough younger kids ready to steal turns, move chips, and hulk-smash the whole operation. We’ve finally gotten to a stage where we can enjoy a few table games, and much of it was about finding the right games for younger kids. I decided to do a round-up of some of our favorites over at Babble . . . one for the . . .
The 6 kinds of parents teachers appreciate
I’ve written before about what kind of school parent I am, and in an episode of Mama Said, Sarah and I discussed my ambivalence about volunteering in their classrooms. Short story, I think a lot about what my kids’ teachers think of me. When I discuss my own parenting style with them—including teachers in my social circles—I keep hearing a lot of similar things: That it’s a collaboration. Parents and teachers have to work together as a team to help our kids reach their potential. So I’ve been . . .

On being a yelling mom
Last month on Mama Said, Sarah and I took questions from readers. A reader asked if yelling is an issue, and . . . yikes. I talk about how this is a struggle for me. How about you? Do you struggle with yelling? How do you keep your cool? Help us out, Michelle Duggar! . . .
