A Day of Christmas Miracles

December 19, 2008

Just after Thanksgiving, every year without fail, I start a little holiday tradition of my own. Anything good that happens, I deem to be a "Christmas Miracle". I just crack myself up with this one for the whole month of December. It never gets old. Right Mark?So last weekend was a weekend of miracles. In an attempt to be the kind of parents who expose their children to more than IKEA and Target, we braved a one of those community events that brings people out in droves. It was a snow day hosted . . .

I Wish This Was For Real

Would it be great if this was actually effective? And I could just sit back and make the kids do this chore? . . .

Fear, Faith, and Motherhood

December 9, 2008

I was directed to a blog post this morning at girl talk and it really spoke to me. The author was asked if she could parent her daughters all over again, what she would do differently. Her response:"While I am aware of numerous ways I would want to be a better mom, one thing stands out far ahead of the rest. I wish I had trusted God more. For every fearful peek into the future, I wish I had looked to Christ instead. For each imaginary trouble conjured up, I wish I had recalled the specific, . . .

Playing Catch With the Kids. Literally.

December 6, 2008

As you may have noticed, my husband and brother-in-laws like to play sports using the kids as EQUIPMENT. Case in point, little boy bowling. And now, I bring you: The Tanner Toss. . . .

Capturing the Elusive Christmas Photo

December 5, 2008

Getting a good Christmas photo is one of those holiday tasks that can incite fear and dread into the heart of even the bravest of parents. I have spent countless hours in a portrait studio my children, puling my hair out and seriously biting my tongue so that I don't scream at the barely-15-year-old employee to TAKE THE FREAKING SHOT and WHO CARES IF HIS KNEES ARE NOT CROSSED, HE JUST SMILED. And then explaining, as they enter into their sale pitch, why I would not like a collage of my kids with . . .

How a handfull of cheerios ended India’s modeling career

November 20, 2008

{at the rehearsal before the show. notice: Cheerios in hand = compliant toddler}India had her first (and last) modeling gig today. It was a runway show for Simple Shoes at a swanky hotel in Laguna Beach. She had one task: walk down the runway, turn around, walk back. Let's just say things did not go as planned, and I don't think we will be asked back. In truth, I really haven't pursued any kind of modeling stuff for her, even though people often tell me I should. But I heard about the show . . .

The Name Game

November 19, 2008

Mark and I have a ridiculously hard time coming up with names for our kids. I don't know what our deal is. We are both picky, and we both have strong opinions. We also like unusual names. But finding one we both like, and agree on, and can commit to . . . that's difficult. We didn't decide on India's name until the nurse walked in with the birth certificate. I'd like to be a little more planned this time.So here we are again, stumped on girl names. Help us out!! I put the ones we like best so . . .

The Asthmatics

November 17, 2008

No, this isn't the name of a new emo band. Jafta and I are, unfortunately, the asthmatics.Asthma is a weird thing. For us, it's something I totally forget about all spring and summer. Every year I think, wow, Jafta's asthma is totally gone! And then fall hits, and we are back to negotiating with the nebulizer.(Jafta watching Baby Einstein with his nebulizer at 7 months old)Having grown up with asthma, I know how gnarly some of those inhaled steroids are. I do my best to deal with his asthma (and . . .
