Keanan Update
Thanks so much for praying for Keanan in Haiti. I don't have much to update. I know he is still in the hospital. I know that doctors in US hospitals are often hard to pin down for updates, and I think it's even more true in Haiti. I know they changed his medications recently and took x-rays of his foot and lungs. I know that he is being well cared for by a good nanny. I know that I would like him to be out of the hospital soon! . . .
Jafta Solves the Haiti Process
Here's a fun little stream-of-conciousness, as a shirtless Jafta eats a ring pop he got at a birthday party. India was napping and daddy was gone, so we had a long heart-to-heart that I just had to capture on film. First he starts talking about the baby, then quickly to asking why Kembert (Keanan) can't come home when they visit. Then he has a lightbulb: fhe Haitian guys are doing paperwork! That's what is holding things up. So insightful. And just as quickly, he's back to discussing the fact . . .
a mini-meltdown and a prayer request
I am having a hard night tonight. Our little guy in Haiti, Keanan, is in the hospital. He has a really bad infection in his foot. It's a bacterial infection, probably staph or something like it. Bacterial infections can be nasty to battle even in the US. Could you please pray that the antibiotics work quickly, and that the infection will go away for good and not require any further intervention? He was admitted on Thursday, and I've been trying to take it in stride. But tonight it just kind of . . .
Ou pral rete avek nou.
Ou pral rete avek nou - You are going to live with us.I've been having a discontented week. If you've been pregnant, you know that feeling when you are nearing the end, and you are just OVER the wait, and ready for the baby to be born already? Yeah, that's how I feel times two right now. I'm anxious for our baby girl to be born, but I'm also feeling a growing sense of wanting and needing Keanan home.I know it's mostly about me, because he is perfectly happy where he is at. There were several . . .
Jwaye Nowel
This was my FAVORITE gift this year: some pictures of Keanan on Christmas Day. He is getting so big, and I am really missing him this season. I can't wait to celebrate Christmas with him at home next year. Here is the most recent update from the orphanage. We love getting these so much, and hearing about his little personality. Sounds like a Howerton boy already. Please keep praying for his adoption process and that he will be home SOON!!Keanan is energy in motion. He is a delightful little boy . . .
Haiti is Haiti, even in New York
We took a little trip to the Haitian Consultate in New York today, because we needed a piece of paper "certified" to send to Haiti. We usually do this stuff by mail, but we thought this would save time and a little postage. The experience at the Haitian Consulate was classic. It was like a little slice of Haiti, right in New York City. When we arrived, there was a glass cubicle with three receptions sitting in it. They were all watching the tv in the waiting room, and the glass room seemed pretty . . .
What’s Taking So Long in Haiti?
People are always asking me why our adoption is taking so long. It is such a hard question to answer. How do you explain the insanity of Haiti adoption? It's a place with absolutely no infrastructure, poor communication, every-changing rules, and absurd corruption. The hoops for completing a legal adoption are almost laughable. Except you've been waiting too long to laugh. Our orphange director John was writing about one of these hurdles in a recent blog post. This story is not about us. . . .
A Happy Birthday in Haiti
On the same day that India turned 2, her brother in Haiti also turned 2. October 7th is a bittersweet day for me. On the one hand, I am reminded of the amazing miracle of India and the day I gave birth to her. On the other hand, it's a painful day because Keanan is not with us to celebrate his birthday, too. I was feeling very melancholy about it, but my spirits were lifted when I got the pictures of his celebration at the orphange. I was sad on his birthday, but look how happy he is! Look how . . .
My Thoughts Exactly
Jafta has figured out that I'm pregnant. I haven't said anything yet, so I'm not sure if someone told him, or if he's just suspicious of my growing belly. For 10 weeks pregnant, I somehow look 6 months pregnant. Anyways, on our way home from preschool today, he asked me if there was a baby growing in my tummy. I told him yes. And then he asked me what kind of baby it was going to be. "A new baby", I said. And Jafta replied:"OH!! I want it to be Keanan! I want to go see Keanan tonight and bring . . .
Joseph Goes Home
Adopting from Haiti is a long, slow, and painful process, and we are always encouraged by stories with happy endings. Over the last year as we have visited Heartline, we got to know Joseph, a teenager with a heartbreaking story. Jafta especially took a liking to Joseph, and followed him around like a puppy dog every time we visited. Joseph was friendly and patient with him, and you would never know that this soft-spoken boy had endured so much. Last week, his adoption was finalized and he got to . . .
