teaching kids to pack their own lunches

August 14, 2012

Next year is going to be a big transition for our family, with three of our kids now in school 5 days a week.  Last year, I felt like packing school lunches was the bane of my existence.  I really had no idea how much work was involved.  I used to hear people complain about it and wondered . . . really?  Is it that hard?  And then last year happened and I was daily baffled at how much energy the procuring and packing of food required.   We are making a . . .

a parent’s guide to The Odd Life of Timothy Green

August 14, 2012

In many ways, Disney’s latest family film The Odd Life of Timothy Green defies genres in the current movie marketplace, harkening back to the family-focused films of days gone by.  It’s a family movie about a family.  It’s not geared towards children per se, but it is absolutely a family film, with a story line and themes that will entertain both kids and parents.  It’s not a kid’s film that adults will merely tolerate, nor is it an adult film that children won’t relate to. It . . .

over yonder

August 13, 2012

I’ve not had much time to write in this space. I’ve been trying (unsuccessfully) to take the month off.  Hahaha. That’s really working out for me. In addition, I’m flying solo for most of the week because my husband is off at a mommy blogger event. Yes, you read that right. This week a brand I’m working with is flying all of their ambassadors out to a swanky beach resort in Cancun.  It came a little too close on the heels of BlogHer for my guilt-ridden travel schedule, so I decided to . . .

that’s what S/HE said: jesus and chicken edition

August 12, 2012

Jen Hatmaker | In the Basement I’m sick of the Jesus forwards and judgment. Sick of majoring on gay marriage. Enough, everyone. With every hate Tweet and finger jab and Bible bludgeon, you are telling my gay friends they are indeed unwelcome, unloved, unvalued, and uninvited. If your agenda is to battle homosexuality, how’s that going? How many gay folks read your Prop 8 yard sign, knocked on your door, and said, “Thank you for voicing your opinion to the neighbors in this manner. Would you . . .

the bittersweet parental projections of watching the olympics

August 10, 2012

Is it just me, or has there been a big focus on the parents of the Olympic athletes this year?  It’s been so fascinating watching and learning about the athletes, but then also hearing the stories of their parents (and watching their reactions during the games).  To be honest, I find the interviews with the parents as interesting as the games themselves. I love the Raising Olympians series that P&G does. (And yes, they are sponsoring this post . . . but not to dork out and watch . . .

latching on to controversy: thoughts on Bloomberg’s breastfeeding initiative

August 9, 2012

Last week, before heading to BlogHer, I did a couple tv spots talking about the new breastfeeding initiative adapted by most maternity wards in New York City.  You can watch my interview with Isha Sesay below.  Since that time, I’ve done even more research into the initiative, and over at Babble I’m talking about what it really says, vs. what the media has been saying.  Click here to read my piece about why I think it’s much ado about nothing. . . .
