describing vs ascribing: digging deeper into talking about race
Last week I talked a bit about how often I notice people dancing around racial descriptors, and how this has led to some awkward interchanges. A friend pointed out that perhaps I was glossing over the context of racial descriptors, and so I want to talk a bit about that. In fact, I think it’s relevant because I think some of the negative context around pointing out someone’s race is what has led to the general unease about acknowledging or discussing issues of race in today’s . . .
what I want you to know: coming to terms with infertility, and why we don’t adopt
What I Want You to Know is a series of reader submissions. It is an attempt to allow people to tell their personal stories, in the hopes of bringing greater compassion to the unique issues each of us face. If you would like to submit a story to this series, click here. This guest post is by Renee. When I was a teenager and other girls were planning their weddings (what they would wear, who would be in their bridal party, etc) I was planning my family- to me the wedding or the . . .
why I want you to stop whining for water in the car: a monologue in one act.
Lights up on a frazzled mother and four children, driving in a minivan. MOTHER: You guys. Seriously. Why is this the only time you ask for water? Let’s talk about a few facts rights now, okay? First of all, let’s talk about places where we can get water. Do we have water at our house? Yes. Yes, we do. We have water from the faucet or water from the fridge. Do we have water at school? Yes. There are water fountains and I also send you with . . .

Anxiety: A Plague, Years Of Wonder | Flux Capacitor So many of my choices are made based on the realization that we all die- anxiety is the mother of this realization: she births at first, a dread of death, and then over time, if cultivated carefully and devotedly, an appreciation of death, and then, an almost painfully exquisite appreciation of life. I have motivated myself my entire adult life like this; moved from a youth of laziness, illness, spiritual, mental and physical . . .

Rewrite Beautiful goal is to change girls from viewing their worth in the superficial for the prevention of eating disorders. Their vision is to build a nation of girls who don’t focus on their bodies, but rather their unique gifts and talents. In Irvina’s words, “We want girls to focus on changing their communities instead of changing their . . .
model behavior
The kids got to do a little modeling this month. I’ve seen too many True Hollywood Story episodes to pursue much more than this, but they seemed to really enjoy it. This was a relief, given India’s performance at her last modeling gig three years ago. Here are a couple of pictures from their shoot with Eli’s Lids. (These are the photos I took –I will share the final product from the real photographer later): They also got to take part in a fashion show for a swanky new . . .
internet, solve my problems: the neighbor kid with the AK-47
On occasional, an issue will arise in my life or in my marriage where I will say to Mark, “I’m going to ask the blog” . . . because I just cannot be trusted to make decisions on my own. Yesterday was one of those days. I’m going to need some feedback. So . . . we have a kid down the street who has taken to walking around the neighborhood while wearing a plastic machine gun. Our house sits between his house and his friend’s so we get the pleasure of seeing him pass by several . . .
