what I want you to know: a teen’s perspective on having a working mom
What I Want You to Know is a series of reader submissions. It is an attempt to allow people to tell their personal stories, in the hopes of bringing greater compassion to the unique issues each of us face. If you would like to submit a story to this series, click here. Today’s guest posts is by Sophie. I happened upon this series of blog posts, and after reading this teenager’s perspective on having a stay-at-home mom I wanted to share my story. What that writer ended with was that you . . .

This week . . . was a full week. And a bit of a doozy. Let’s start at last weekend. We’ve been chomping at the bit to get started on the remodel of our new house, but the previous owner is renting it back from us for a few months. She let us know that she was going out of town for a few days, so we got all Extreme Home Makeoever on the house. We put in new windows, scraped the ceilings, demo-ed the exterior, and re-stuccoed the house. In one weekend. Our goal was to have the whole thing . . .
the facebook private message fiasco – how to report evidence it's happening
Well . .. . last week I posted about the rumor that private messages were showing up on people’s facebook walls, and I was not expecting the response I got. A number of people came by to scold me – to point out the snopes article or the facebook public statement saying that this was a hoax. I even got an email from facebook telling me as much. But at the same time, over half of the responses were from people who found what they are convinced were private messages hanging around on their wall. . . .
right mom/left mom: what defines a conservative (and is Elizabeth really “right”?)
Today we are talking about the elephant in the room: a number of our readers don't believe that Elizabeth is conservative enough. We have a few thoughts on that . . . How do you define yourself politically? Do you find the labels to be helpful? . . .
raising kids who love to read
I am far from a perfect parent . . . there are many areas of motherhood where I’m not exactly meeting my goals. I would say I’m pulling a strong B in terms of getting the kids to school on time. Home-cooked meals? Probably a C-. Taking the time to get on the floor and play with my kids? Ouch. I’m probably getting a failing grade there. However, there is one area of parenting where I feel like I am doing alright. in fact, I might even give myself an A+. And it’s an area that I feel . . .
the ricki lake show covers adoption this friday
So a couple weeks ago, this happened: I’ve been waiting to post about it until I knew the air date, and I just found out it airs this week! I will be one of several guests on Ricki Lake this Friday October 5th talking about adoption. I had a really great experience on the show. I appreciated the fact that Ricki and her production team were really looking to tell our stories rather than drum up drama. I’ve long admired Ricki Lake – I struggled not to go all fangirl on her when we met . . .
what I want you to know: being a christian and a democrat
What I Want You to Know is a series of reader submissions. It is an attempt to allow people to tell their personal stories, in the hopes of bringing greater compassion to the unique issues each of us face. If you would like to submit a story to this series, click here. This guest post is by an anonymous reader. I come from a Christian family. I accepted Jesus into my heart when I was in middle school and pretty much grew up in the church. I also come from a politically divided family: my mom’s . . .
alerting teachers to adoption-related issues: how much do you divulge, and when?
I don’t talk very much about some of the attachment-related issues that our family deals with. I’m intentionally vague about it, but at the same time I’m not trying to sugar-coat anything. I don’t think it’s honoring to go into detail about all of the ways my child struggles with attachment, but at the same time, I don’t think it’s helpful to other adoptive families who read here to pretend like it isn’t a factor. So I will preface this post by making a sweeping generalization: kids who . . .

The kids call this “building a spaceship”. I really have no idea what a pile of children has to do with space travel, but there you go. After I took these photo they decided to reverse the order, with Karis on bottom and Jafta on top. It didn’t go so well. India finally learned to ride a bike without training wheels! She has been hesitant but finally gave it the college try after seeing her 3-year-old sister do it. It’s amazing what a little sibling rivalry can do in the motivation . . .
#facebookfail: the fix for facebook’s private message breach
All week long, I’ve been hearing this rumor that facebook was suddenly publishing private messages onto people’s facebook walls instead of in the inbox. It seems there is some glich that caused all private messages prior to 2010 to revert to wall posts – meaning that anything you send someone else prior to 2010 is now posted on their wall instead of in their inbox. This sounded so preposterous to me that I ignored it. I am always wary of hoaxes about facebook, and this seems alarmist and insane. . . .
