Lessons about maternal health from Merck for Moms

August 19, 2014

Sponsored by Merck for Mothers and BlogHer.  A few weeks ago at BlogHer '14 I had the chance to attend a seminar given by Merck for Mothers on global maternal health. It was an eye-opening experience. We learned that every 10 minutes, a woman in the U.S. nearly dies from complications of pregnancy and childbirth. Most of these deaths are preventable. That's why Merck created Merck for Mothers, a 10-year initiative designed to reduce maternal . . .

NatureBox: a healthy snack subscription service (and a giveaway!)

August 18, 2014

This post is sponsored by NatureBox. The giveaway is now closed. Congrats to Liz and Anita! We've tried to minimize the processed food in our home. It seems like so much of the packaged foods on the grocery store shelves have ingredients that we are trying to avoid . . . from refined sugars to trans fats to high fructose corn syrup. Jafta and I are also gluten-free, which narrows our choices a bit, and I've also been really trying to minimize the food dyes we consume. When I heard about . . .

That’s what SHE said: Reflections on #Ferguson

August 16, 2014

First They Came For The Black People, And I Did Not Speak Out | Matt Stauffer It’s because this is what we expect. It fits our narrative of the world. Black people in urban settings fighting the police? Look at the kid they shot. His pants were sagging. He was walking in the middle of the street. Look at the interview with that guy who’s protesting–he was speaking in Ebonics. Probably didn’t even finish high school. Look! They’re looting. This is why they can’t have nice things. So when the . . .

How to get kids to pack their own lunches

August 15, 2014

This post is sponsored by Blue Diamond Almonds. Kids are picky about food. I've gone one really adventurous eater (see my #FoodieJafta tag on instagram), but for the others, pickiness seems to be an inherent trait that they were born with.  We can work our way around this pickiness at home—usually—but it gets tricky at school. I remember trading lunches with other kids back when I was in school. But with teachers and cafeteria monitors walking around and a much greater sensitivity to . . .

Racial bias, police brutality, and the dangerous act of being black

August 14, 2014

Last week, an unarmed black teenager was fatally shot in Ferguson, Missouri and left to lay in the street for four hours as a community watched in horror. Tensions have mounted as police reports have varied wildly from eye-witness accounts, and that anger was fueled further as the police department refused to answer questions about his death. At this point, the police chief has back-stepped his own statement of facts, and is now unwilling to report that he knows anything definitive about this . . .

Invisalign update: my mom gets her aligners

August 14, 2014

This post was sponsored by Invisalign. My nephew and mom are receiving complimentary Invisalign treatment as they share their Invisalign journey. I have been sharing my mom’s Invisalign treatment journey this year, and I'm excited to say that she has finally been fitted with her aligners! She had some dental work to do before getting them, and now she's in the clear. I'm going to let her share the story: My most recent appointment in my Invisalign journey was on July 22nd. It was my . . .

On participant ribbons and letting kids always win

August 12, 2014

I just went to a fair with my kids, where all four of them participated in a hula-hoop contest. My children are not world-class hula-hoopers. They are mediocre at best and didn't outlast the winner. It was just something fun for them to do. But guess what? They all won participant ribbons! So forever we can celebrate and remember their mediocrity at rotating a plastic hoop around their hips. Sigh. They loved the ribbons. They smiled and proudly showed them to Dad, who secretly rolled his . . .
