A prescription for the “wired and tired” trap
This post is sponsored by Prescribe Nutrition In the past couple of years I’ve had more and more friends dealing with health issues, fatigue, and insomnia, who have made an overhaul to their diet with great success. This has been true for me as well, though I have to admit that despite knowing the different healthy eating makes, it’s not always easy to stick to it. A new service called Prescribe Nutrition seeks to bridge that gap for busy people who need a little help and accountability. I . . .
What I want you to know about coming home from the hospital while your baby is in the NICU
What I Want You to Know is a series of reader submissions. It is an attempt to allow people to tell their personal stories, in the hopes of bringing greater compassion to the unique issues each of us face. If you would like to submit a story to this series, click here. Today’s guest post is by Organized Mama. You don't know sadness to the depth of your soul until you are sitting in your house and your newborn baby is fifty miles away in a NICU. This was the hardest thing I . . .
Weighing in on ourselves
This post was sponsored by Lean Cuisine’s #WeighThis campaign. You can learn more about the campaign here. Last week I talked about how I’m trying to teach my daughters to put weight on who they are and not what they look like. Lean Cuisine’s #WeighThis campaign is asking women to talk about the things they are proud of – the things that they wish their value was weighed on as opposed to physical appearance. Many of you chimed in with your own self-affirmations and I loved reading them. So many . . .
Legislated morality, civil rights, and the Christian response to marriage equality
As the Supreme Court ruling came down affirming the rights of LGBT people to marry, the responses from concerned Christians rolled in. I’ve been heartened to see many Christians expressing support, but as expected, there has also been a chorus of dissention from Christian circles. I was particularly disappointed, but not really surprised, at the negative response from many evangelical leaders. What is curious to me is how few people seem to understand the difference between civil rights and . . .
Dreams Las Mareas, Costa Rica
Last month the Dreams Las Mareas resort reached out to me and asked if I’d like to bring a kid along to experience their all-inclusive, family-friendly spot in Costa Rica. We’ve always talked about doing special trips with the kids at certain times, and decided this would be the perfect “10-year-old trip” for Jafta. New family tradition! (India is already planning our New York broadway tour for her 10th in two years.) I had a look at Las Marea’s website and immediately knew that the zip-lining, . . .

On what we value in ourselves and others
This post was sponsored by Lean Cuisine’s #WeighThis campaign I don’t talk much about life in Orange County. I have a love-hate relationship with it. I love being close to the beach. I love the casual surf culture, the moderate weather, and the amenities for families. But one thing I really DON’T love is the emphasis on physical appearance. I live in a community that is looks-obsessed. There are plastic surgeons on every corner, and it seems like everyone is constantly on a diet. Women don’t . . .
Wednesday’s Child: Jacob
Every Wednesday I feature a child recently highlighted by a local Wednesday's Child newscast to share the stories of children from around the country who are waiting for a family. My hope is that this can broaden exposure for the children highlighted, but also serve as a reminder that these children represent thousands of children currently in the foster-care system. Perhaps their stories will inspire you to consider opening your home to a child needing a family. For more information and to . . .

I knew something was amiss when my family doctor entered the delivery room and asked if I would like for him to get the Chaplain. Sure, I had just had a rough delivery 30 . . .
How to improve a child’s emotional IQ
Emotional IQ – it may get a bad rap as a cliche pop-psych term, but it’s something I really value for my kids. I want them to be great students and well-read, but none of that matters if they can’t engage and interact well with their peers. I want my kids to be good social citizens, and emotional IQ is where that starts. Our emotional IQ is what helps us be empathetic to others. It’s what helps us cooperate, interpret social cues, and identify our own thoughts and feelings. Most people dislike . . .
