That’s what SHE said: vulnerable black bodies, mixed-up twins, moms who love gangsta rap, the parenting wall, and more . . .
ON THE DEATH OF SANDRA BLAND AND OUR VULNERABLE BODIESBecause Sandra Bland was driving while black, because she was not subservient in the manner this trooper preferred, a routine traffic stop became a death sentence. Even if Ms. Bland did commit suicide, there is an entire system of injustice whose fingerprints left bruises on her throat.TRYING OUT SLOW PARENTINGThis month, I’m inspired to slow down and let the boys take the lead. Maybe we’ll skip a carousel excursion and instead just walk . . .

This is especially true of my third child who is ten years old. She is beautiful, smart, . . .
The beauty of summer boredom
On Thursdays I post something from the vault. This post is from July 2015. When I was a kid, one of my favorite things to do was to be in my room creating imaginary worlds for all my My Little Ponies. I also loved to have a friend come over so we could play Barbies all afternoon. Or to make up dance routines to Madonna’s True Blue album. Or to ride my bike around my neighborhood and see who else was outside that might want to ride bikes with me or play a game or chase boys. I was never bored. . . .
Wednesday’s Child: Dylan & Aiden
Every Wednesday I feature a child recently highlighted by a local Wednesday's Child newscast to share the stories of children from around the country who are waiting for a family. My hope is that this can broaden exposure for the children highlighted, but also serve as a reminder that these children represent thousands of children currently in the foster-care system. Perhaps their stories will inspire you to consider opening your home to a child needing a family. For more information and to . . .

On Planned Parenthood and the language we use around pregnancy and abortion
This is a guest post written by Hilary Yancey. “Here is Baby’s heartbeat… and the lungs… and the gallbladder. People are always surprised when I can point that one out.” “Do you want to talk about terminating the pregnancy?” The space between these statements was about 45 minutes. Enough time for the doctor to sit in the room, looking at the ultrasound footage, the 19 week old fetus, arms and legs wiggling insistently, turning one way and the other, avoiding showing everyone the reason we . . .
QOES: What is your go-to fast food?
We'd all like to cook perfectly balanced and healthy meals every night for our precious babes. How lovely would that be? But sometimes...it just doesn't work out. Life can get complicated. Sports practices that run into dinner . . . or a three month stretch of living in a renovation without a kitchen. There are days we can't keep our kids' names straight let alone plan and execute some home cooking. That's what drive-thrus are for. Source It's hard to imagine a mom who hasn't ordered some . . .

On that flag, and being Southern and proud . . .
By Timothy Rouse, posted with permission Let me start by saying this... I am a southerner! I was born in the south, raised in the south, and (as far as I can tell) I will likely die in the south. This is where I met my wife, started raising my kids, and it is where I feel I belong. So I have a unique perspective on what people are talking about when they talk about "heritage" and "culture" because it's the heritage and culture I grew up in. I have seen the good things within that culture. Love . . .
