design dilemma: choosing the exterior color

January 12, 2013

I remember when we started this remodel, I thought how fun it would be to be able to share what we are doing and maybe provide a little design inspiration. Instead, most of my house posts seem to revolve around me asking the internet to solve my indecision. This is yet another one of those posts. Topic of the day: painting the outside of the house. We’ve got a long way to go with the outside (hello, landscaping) but we need to choose an exterior paint color. Initially, we choose a tinted stucco . . .

email of the year, presented without comment

January 11, 2013

Ms. Howerton, Well, I have forwarded a huge number of unique visitors to your sight solely for the opportunity to watch Downton Abbey episode 3. So, you can thank me for that big spike in traffic this past month. Sadly, out of boredom and curiosity I read a few of your posts. Sad to say that you are severely misguided about American history, and politics. Too bad you are not actually in love with my country, and her traditions and values, otherwise I would gladly heap lots of praise on you and . . .

dear pastor mark: pontificate this.

January 10, 2013

Hello, Pastor Mark. I’d like to talk about something you said on twitter yesterday. I realize that you have been raked over the coals by a number of bloggers in the past couple of years. Christian bloggers have taken you to task for suggesting that God hates people. They’ve called you out on your homophobia and weird gender rules, and for your shock-jock attention seeking bravado. They’ve expressed frustration about the way you belittle women, exalt fist-fighting as conflict resolution, make . . .

holiday road trip, part 2: minivan off-roading, ya’ll

January 10, 2013

On Monday I talked a little about our beach vacation in Daytona over the holiday break.  One of the things that is unique about Daytona (at least to us Californians) is that you can drive on the beach. I grew up going to this beach so it’s old hat to me, but Mark mentioned that it was one of the things he wanted to try while we were there.  So even though our resort was right on the water, we did take the Town & Country for a spin a couple days.     Okay, okay. It’s . . .

random bullets coming at you (and a refrigerator giveaway)

January 9, 2013

I've been meaning for years to write some suggestions for people who ask me for advice about international adoption. Well, my friend Jillian Lauren just did it for me. Will now forward all inquiries to the wisdom she imparts in this post. I’m going to be speaking at a few events in the coming months. At the end of January, I will be speaking at the Dad.2 Summit in Houston, TX. Mark will be there and is speaking as well. I will also be at Killer Tribes in Atlanta in March. I’ve heard great . . .

he still waits

January 9, 2013

This is one of the most compelling videos I’ve ever seen. I hope you will take a couple minutes to watch it. . . . and having seen that, would you consider this?  The following was written by Salem and I’m reposting with her permission.   He still waits. Two years ago I walked into an orphanage in Africa and met a precious baby boy. Elias* was about a year old.  I was told he had seizures and low muscle tone.  He had reflux and was considered “failure to thrive”.  His . . .

TALK BACK TUESDAY: how did you ring in the new year?

January 8, 2013

I have a love/hate relationship with New Year’s Eve, and it seems like each year, I am more and more conflicted on how to spend it. It’s my birthday, which is part of the reason I hate/love it. New Year’s Eve sucks as a birthday because it means double the build-up, equaling to double the let-down should the day play out in any kind of mundane way.  I am not immune to the birthday blues . . . those pangs of disappointment when THE BIG DAY is less than stellar.  When you add New . . .

holiday road trip, part 1: destination Daytona Beach

January 7, 2013

We are finally settling in after our trip to Florida. We came home to our new house that we’d moved into shortly before the trip, which was a surreal experience. It’s the first time I’ve ever come home from a long trip and not felt like I was “home”.  We’ve still got a long ways to go in terms of packing and making it feel homey.     We left for Florida on Christmas night, in short because it was the only affordable fare that week. Not many people are keen to take a red-eye . . .

we need to talk about the downton abbey season 3 premiere!

January 7, 2013

Alright, folks. As I’ve admitted before, I’m a bit of a Downton Abbey dork. Luckily, I have other people in my life who share my passion. My friend Sarah and I decided we needed to make a video after each episode to process our Big Feelings about this show. So, without further adieu, I present: Look how serious we are!! I was cracking up trying to get a screenshot of us looking “normal” during this video. One of us is cringing or emoting during the entire video. Here’s our reaction to the first . . .
