that’s what SHE said: faith, gender, and privilege edition

January 20, 2013

As Social Issues Drive Young From Church, Leaders Try To Keep Them | NPR "If the church was known more for our efforts to welcome the stranger than keep them out, I think the church would have greater credibility with rising generations," says Baughman. "For example, on immigration policies, we've taken the wrong stance on that, and they know. The thing is they're smart enough. A lot of them have grown up in the church and then rejected it. They've read the scriptures that talk about . . .

recycling brown bags as custom wrapping paper

January 17, 2013

I thought I would share a simple way we recycle old grocery bags in our house. I try my best to use reusable bags, but inevitably I remember them at the checkout stand with a pile full of groceries in my cart, after it’s too late to run to the car and fetch them.  When this happens I ask for paper bags, and once I’m home I fold them up and stash them in a drawer. Whenever we have a birthday party to attend, I will pull one out and use it as wrapping paper, and then let the kids decorate . . .

holiday road-trip part 4: the beach tailgate

January 17, 2013

Okay, last post about our holiday vacation, and then I’m going to go take down the Christmas tree. Kidding! (We did it yesterday). We we thrilled to try out the new Town and Country during our trip to Daytona. I mentioned last week that despite being in a resort on the water, we took the car out for a spin so Mark could have the experience of driving on the sand.  Well, it ended up being so convenient having our car as a home base that we did it again the next day.  I love that we . . .

How I became the mother of the little girl from Good Luck Charlie (alternate title: Why children should not be on instagram)

January 17, 2013

Late last week I was sitting in line to pick up my kids when I noticed my phone alerts for instagram were coming fast and furious – a little odd since I hadn’t posted a photo in a while. When I got home, I checked instagram and noticed I had been tagged by a number of fan pages for Mia Talerico . . . the little actress who plays Charlie in the popular Disney Channel sitcom. Apparently, several of them had made the discovery that an instagram user posing as Claire Talerico, Mia ’s mom, was . . .

dishing on downton abbey, episode 2 (take 2!) . . . oh, Edith!

January 16, 2013

Okay, fellow Downton Dorks. As many of you noted, Sarah and I got our episodes confused, since we cheated and watched the British version instead of waiting for it to premiere in the US.  The recap I posted on Sunday for episode 2 was actually a discussion of the 2nd half of the US premiere, since the two first British episodes were combined for us here.  Anyhoo, here we are talking about episode 2, in which Edith . . . well. You know. Spoilers ahead! Once again, I was dying laughing . . .

holiday road trip, part 3: a race to the hospital

January 14, 2013

Okay, I’ve been wanting to share this part of our holiday trip, but needed to find the time and space to write it all out. As I mentioned before, my entire family (including my sisters, my mom, and 15 kids between us) drove out to Daytona to spend some time together at a resort by the beach. My sister Kim was due on December 31 but decided to go out anyway, since it was only about an hour from the hospital she where she planned to give birth.  Everything was going along pretty uneventfully . . .

the best reads of 2012

January 14, 2013

As we start the new year, I thought I would share the best books I read in 2012. Some are new and some are older, but all of them were really enjoyable and engaging books. Gone Girl: A Novel This was probably the most-talked-about book of 2012 and for good reason – it’s an engaging mystery written with a razor-sharp wit. It will keep you up at night, turning pages until you come to the surprising truth about the girl who vanished. Angle of Repose (Penguin Twentieth-Century . . .

much ado about dinner jackets: dishing on downton abbey season 3 episode 2

January 14, 2013

Once again, Sarah James and I are getting together to process the latest Downton Abbey episode. What did you think of episode 2? I have to admit: it wasn’t our favorite. . . .

that’s what SHE said: on not being pretty, rudeness and running late, that kidsbop commercial, giving men their balls back, and future fat thighs

January 13, 2013

You Don’t Have to Be Pretty | Dress-A-Day.com I'm not saying that you SHOULDN'T be pretty if you want to. (You don't owe UN-prettiness to feminism, in other words.) Pretty is pleasant, and fun, and satisfying, and makes people smile, often even at you. But in the hierarchy of importance, pretty stands several rungs down from happy, is way below healthy, and if done as a penance, or an obligation, can be so far away from independent that you may have to squint really hard to see it in the haze. . . .

haiti: three years later and breaking ground

January 13, 2013

It’s hard to believe that it was just three years ago that Kembe, Karis and I were in Haiti the day the earth shook. And today, I have great news to share: the school that was funded out of my trip with Help One Now BROKE GROUND TODAY. It seems so fitting that this momentous day takes place on the anniversary of the earthquake. Thank you to all of you who donated. I’m so excited about this project and about the impact it will have for the children in this village. . . .
