Ten news stories from this year that will restore your faith in humanity

December 29, 2013

Unrest in the Middle East, the Boston Marathon bombings, the NSA spying scandal, the government shutdown, Miley Cyrus...there have been plenty of news stories in 2013 that make me want to curl up in a fetal position. People can absolutely be the worst. Which is why I'm a sucker for those yearly roundups of uplifting news you tend to see at this time every year. You know, the ones that are supposed to restore your faith in humanity? Because here at the end of 2013, it turns out I do, in fact, . . .

About a boy

December 28, 2013

Yesterday I waxed a little nostalgic about Jafta on instagram as we celebrated his birthday. I thought I would share that here for those of you not following me there. It occurred to me that I’ve never really blogged about Jafta’s adoption story, since it happened before I started blogging. Some of it is here, but I will have to dedicate some time to write more about it in the future. It’s a long, emotional story. Jafta joined our family as a foster child at 6 months old, and we finalized his . . .

Jafta turns 9!

December 27, 2013

Jafta turns 9 today! It's hard to believe my oldest is nine. Why does that seem so big? We are currently visiting my family in Florida, so we had a birthday party for him before we left. He has been begging to have a GameTruck party ever since he learned that it was A Thing, and Skylanders offered to host a GameTruck party with their new Swap Force game. He was over the moon about the idea. When we pulled up to our house the day of the party and saw the truck in the driveway, he screamed in . . .

Questions of eternal significance: Do your kids believe in Santa?

December 24, 2013

We are a house divided on the Santa front. My boys don’t believe in Santa, but my girls do. Jafta is decidedly OVER Santa. This picture may give you an idea of his feelings on the matter:     And also this one: Jafta is not impressed.   It’s funny that any of my kids believe in Santa, because I’ve never told any of them about him. I don’t have strong feelings against the Santa thing, but I also don’t love the idea of weaving a hugely elaborate lie. I’m conflicted, I’ll admit. . . .
