What we can learn from Melissa Harris-Perry

January 7, 2014

Last week, a segment appeared on Melissa Harris-Perry’s show on MSNBC that reviewed the best photos of the year and asked a panel of actors and comedians to give them humorous captions. It was supposed to be a light-hearted look back at the year, but things went awry. One of the photos was of Mitt and Ann Romney surrounded by all of their grandchildren . . . a photo tradition the Romney's do every year. This year, Mitt was holding his newly adopted African-American grandson, the only person of . . .

Dishing on Downton (Season 4 Premiere)

January 6, 2014

We're back! I know I said I was taking a break from Downton Abbey after the trauma of last year's season finale, but who am I kidding?Once again, I am dishing with my friend Sarah James on each Downton Abbey episode this season. Here is our recap of the premiere.   Oh, and by the way . . . our last episode was incomplete. Sarah and I cheated and watched the British episodes of Downton Abbey when they aired, and the American premiere was actually two episodes combined together. So the . . .

Questions of Eternal Significance: How did you ring in the new year?

January 4, 2014

I am always to hear how other people celebrate New Year's Eve. It's my birthday, which sort of skews my view of this yearly milestone. New Year’s Eve sucks as a birthday because it means double the build-up, equaling to double the let-down should the day play out in any kind of mundane way.  I feel like New Year’s Eve is this looming holiday we’ve given so much import to . . .  that there is some underlying meaning we’ve assigned to how we spend ringing in the new year.  (Right? . . .

On this episode of Mama Said, Sarah and I are talking about how we get (or try to get) our kids to go to bed. How about you? Do you have any strategies for bedtime? . . .

What I want you to know about being unprepared for sex

Yes, many of us have cast out Victorian bashfulness along with horse-drawn carriages, monocles, and petticoats. But not all of us. The only thing my parents had ever . . .

What I want you to know about being a missionary

I’ve been involved in evangelism, medical ministry, child care ministry, literacy, education, women’s co-operatives, and I could continue; but I . . .

Yearly Recap 2013

December 31, 2013

I read this yearly recap on All & Sundry’s blog a couple years ago, and have been doing it every year since.   1. What did you do in 2013 that you’d never done before? I planned ahead with a meal plan for the week, bought the groceries for said meals, and then cooked accordingly each night. Sad to say that in my 38 years, this is the first time I’ve dabbled in meal planning instead of trying to figure out what to make every evening at 5pm. I’m hoping to do more of it in the coming . . .

Best Books of 2013

December 31, 2013

I’m not sure I’m really qualified to comment on the best books of the year since I haven’t read that many. Perhaps this should be called “My favorite reads.” But here are some of the books I read this year that I really enjoyed and recommend. Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple – This quirky, clever novel was a page-turning collection of correspondence seeking to discover why an anxious housewife disappeared. The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman – This beautiful novel tells the . . .

When people ask me how many children I have, and I answer, the reaction is always the same...open mouthed shock. I'm 34, and . . .

That’s what SHE said: on breaking the internet, making friends in your 30’s, overdocumenting your life, Asians as sidekicks, and more . . .

December 29, 2013

The Documented Life | NYTimes.Com These days, when people are alone, or feel a moment of boredom, they tend to reach for a device. In a movie theater, at a stop sign, at the checkout line at a supermarket and, yes, at a memorial service, reaching for a device becomes so natural that we start to forget that there is a reason, a good reason, to sit still with our thoughts: It does honor to what we are thinking about. It does honor to ourselves. God May Not Have A Wonderful Plan For Your Life | . . .
