Questions of eternal significance: what was your favorite toy as a child?

April 12, 2013

I was thinking about childhood toys today, as Karis was playing with one of mine. The toy I have the most memories of playing with as a child was this Sesame Street Playhouse from Fisher Price: I loved this thing so much as a kid that when I had my own, I went searching for one on ebay. I ended up paying an obscene amount for an intact set, but it was worth it. Karis plays with it daily, and I really think it is her favorite, too. Today several of the figures were having a tea party . . .

Questions of eternal significance: beards on men . . . hot or not?

March 15, 2013

Mark and I watched the documentary Mansome last weekend, which is dedicated to looking at the grooming habits of men. There was a segment about the growing popularity of beards, and the phenomena of beard competitions. I’ve definitely noticed the trend . . . it seems like beards are in full season at all the local hipster joints. My friend Sarah even has a Pintrest board dedicated to “beard porn”. Questions of Eternal Significance: Do you enjoy winter weather?

March 1, 2013

This week we have been experiencing some really beautiful weather here in Southern California. It has been surreal to post pictures on Instagram of my kids basking in the sunshine, and then scroll through my feed to see so many pictures of sledding children and snow-covered houses. I almost feel guilty about posting the photos of us cavorting outdoors while so many people are in the middle of snow storms . . . but then again, I am reminded that not everyone abhors winter weather quite the way I . . .

Questions of Eternal Significance: What did you “do” in high school?

February 8, 2013

I wanted to lighten things up around here after a week of more serious topics, so I thought I’d throw out a random question. I’ve been doing this with the “Talk Back Tuesday” series and it has been so fun to read responses, but the reality is that every time I try to do a day-of-the-week focused series, I end up skipping and then wanting to post on another day and feeling stunted by my efforts at being scheduled when in reality it just isn’t going to happen. So.  Talk Back Tuesdays shall . . .

talk back tuesday (thursday): how do you do Christmas?

December 27, 2012

I’m curious to hear how other people celebrate Christmas.  When do you open gifts? Do your kids believe in Santa? Do you have Christmas at your own home, or do you visit parents or in-laws? Growing up, we did the same thing every Christmas . . . we drove from Missouri to Florida to visit my grandparents, and we opened our gifts on Christmas morning.  I remember having friends who attended midnight mass and opened their gifts on Christmas Eve. That blew my mind – how did Santa come if . . .

talk back tuesday: what’s on your tree and who put it there?

December 18, 2012

We are in the middle of moving into our new house, and I have been struggling to figure out when and where to put up the Christmas tree. I was considering abandoning it altogether since we are traveling for Christmas, but after lamenting our lack of Christmas décor Mark finally took pity on me and set it up in the new house. We aren’t completely moved in yet, but it made more since to have it there since the big goal is to be completely moved in by Christmas morning. Our schedules have been . . .
