. . . let us be dissatisfied until those that live on the outskirts of hope are brought into the metropolis of daily security.
"So, I conclude by saying again today that we have a task and let us go out with a "divine dissatisfaction." Let us be dissatisfied until America will no longer have a high blood pressure of creeds and an anemia of deeds. Let us be dissatisfied until the tragic walls that separate the outer city of wealth and comfort and the inner city of poverty and despair shall be crushed by the battering rams of the forces of justice. Let us be dissatisfied until those that live on . . .
change a life this christmas
Jeannett is no stranger to philanthropy through blogging, Her blog is a regular host of guest posts that are matched with giveaways benefits a charity of choice. Last Christmas, she set her sights on something that could change one person’s life forever – a pretty lofty goal. Many bloggers joined Jeannett in sharing Cliff’s story and last Christmas, $5 at a time, readers made a difference for Cliff and raised almost $9,500 for his adoption. Cliff is now Joshua and . . .
gifts that give back 2011
In a season marked by giving, I love the idea of giving back to our community and our planet. A few years ago, my family decided to forego gifts for the adults, and give donations in each person’s name instead. It’s been so fun thinking of each family member and finding ways to honor each of them with a unique donation. Here are some great ways you can do your Christmas shopping and give back at the same time. Ever/After Clothing Ever/After is a casual lifestyle clothing brand for . . .
raising money for charity: water
Recently I’ve been reading Claire Ortiz’s new book called Twitter for Good, which is full of stories about how twitter has impacted the world. I know a lot of people view social media as a trivial distraction. Some might even think it’s an exercise in narcissism. I get that. Sometimes it is. But sometimes, social media can be used to do amazing things. In my own life, I’ve seen social media used as a medium for great things. I shared about needs for the . . .
Ideas for an Ethical Halloween
I’ve been wanting to do a follow-up post on the connection between child slavery and chocolate. In case you missed it, the low-down is here . . . but in a nutshell a BBC documentary revealed that child labor and even child trafficking is rampant in chocolate production, and that chocolate from most mainstream candy companies can be traced back to farms employing (and even buying) children to work in dangerous conditions. For our family, the response to learning this has been to . . .
here, let me ruin Halloween for you . . .
Yesterday I wrote a ridiculous post about deciding on a new place to buy my coffee . . . a place where the prices were really low because the store relied on children to work for little money. My intention was to point out how selfish it sounds for someone to willingly turn a blind eye to social injustices just because we want to pay less for something we like, and how shallow our justifications sound. I used coffee as an example because it’s one of those indulgences that people . . .
I’ve figured out a way to get coffee for 70% less money!
So. I am a huge fan of coffee. Like, I NEED IT. Every day. But the prices at Starbucks put a real dent in the wallet, you know? So I have found this awesome new coffee shop near my house. They serve the most amazing coffee – even better than Starbucks. But here’s the kicker: a latter will only set you back 75 cents. A triple cappuccino with extra foam? 89 cents!! Here’s how it works. See, this coffee shop uses little kids to . . .
a family for moses
This is a post in search of a family . . . a family for a very special boy in Haiti. My friends at Heartline continue to do amazing things to help young moms care for their children in Haiti. There are so many stories of moms finding strength and hope (you can read some of them here). But there are times when adoption is the right option . . . and adoption is the right option for Moses. Disabled and abandoned in the dirt, Moses has very little chance for a quality life in . . .
a new film on eradicating poverty
A couple months ago I wrote about a new campaign that Compassion International is behind. It’s called Live58, and they have created a film called 58: Fast Forward The End of Poverty. The goal of this campaign is to unite churches to eradicate poverty. The movie premieres this October, and it is full of inspiring stories of the global church in action. I had the chance to preview the film, and what I really like is the way it highlights the way everyday people are effecting change, . . .
kickstart a change
There are a couple charitable organizations that I am connected to in one way or another, and I wanted to highlight some of the things they are doing right now. If you are looking for some organizations to support, these are some very worthy causes. Krochet Kids is an amazing organization that allows impoverished women to earn money by crocheting hats that are sold in the US. They have been based in Uganda for some time, but my friend Sarah (who blogs at but now to live the life) . . .
