How It All Went Down

May 9, 2008

Okay, so I guess I should elaborate on the Dreadlock Disaster. My cryptic post yesterday was all my could muster in the midst of my grief. Yeah, that's right, grief. Stop rolling your eyes. I'm not being overdramatic. I would never do that.So step one was that I tried to convince Jafta that we would just cut his dreadlocks shorter. That seemed like a win-win to me. I gave them a good trim, but I didn't have a clue what I was doing. The dreadlocks started getting puffy at the tip where I cut . . .

The Dreadlock Dilemma

May 7, 2008

Jafta has been asking me, with increasing fervor, to cut his dreadlocks off. He really wants a buzzcut like his friend Nate, and like his cousins Austin and Derek. I think that he is at an age where he is noticing the physical differences between he and most of his friends. His hair is a major difference, and he wants to look more like everybody else. I know that this is the right thing to do for him, but I am just wrestling with it. I know it sounds so shallow. It's just hair, right? But for . . .

Out of Touch

April 24, 2008

I am officially out of touch. I picked up an Us Magazine the other day and didn't recognize half of the celebrities pictured. I don't watch American Idol. I've never seen The Hills. And I'm not even sure what Gossip Girl is. I've heard of bands like Fallout Boy and Panic at the Disco. I think they are supposed to be cool but I don't know what they sing. I haven't seen a movie in the theatre in, um, a very long time. I don't even go to the mall anymore, so Old Navy is now my fashion compass. . . .

The Price for Pictures

April 21, 2008

I have been wanting to get some good shots of the two of my kids. It is SO hard to get a picture where both of them are smiling and looking at the camera. Today, I was determined. I think some of them came out cute. But this is how it ended: . . .

Mean Mommy

April 16, 2008

I am a mean mommy. We were at Payless yesterday, and Jafta spotted a pair of generic crocs with Cars logos on each side, and a Cars baseball cap. He was so excited. He loved them. He put them on and began professing his love for the Cars movie. He looked in the mirror and thought he looked like a million bucks. He begged, I mean BEGGED, for these shoes.Thing is, he looked like a total dork in these shoes and hat. They were hideous. He looked completely ready for the short bus with these things . . .

I Am The Queen of Self-Care

April 15, 2008

Some days, your values just collide, and you have to choose between self-care and a competing value. Oftentimes, it is self-care vs. kid-care. Today, it was self-care vs. frugality. Frugality won. This was my afternoon snack. Two half-eaten apples. Because I wanted an apple, but couldn't stand to throw away randomly-bitten-but-mostly-intact apples I served my kids for lunch. They were 69 cents each, after all.In retrospect, perhaps self-care would have been a better choice. . . .
