Do you know about Bookmooch? It's a free website that allows you to list your own used books, and then "mooch" books you want from others. If you send a book, you get a point. You can use that point to get a different book. Simple, and yet genius! The only cost involved is mailing your books. I usually take my brown grocery bags, cut them up, and wrap the book in it, and it's typically $2.33 to send. These were the books I gave away last week:White Teeth: A NovelMagical Thinking: True . . .
Getting By On What Ya Got
The kids decided to climb into their water table. Do you think they want us to get a swimming pool??I think this was a hint. . . .
Jimmy Carter : Man from Plains
I love a good documentary. I feel like I can learn more from a well-made documentary than I ever can from watching hours of American news media. I especially love movies that expose injustice, cultural issues, or a side of humanity that is misunderstood or under-represented. Last night, we watched Jimmy Carter: Man from Plains. I thought this would be a movie that documented the life of Jimmy Carter (which it did, and he is my new hero). But what I really learned about from the film was the . . .
Fearless
Here is a little clip of Jafta and company being pulled on a raft behind a ski boat in Seattle. Jafta is yelling, "faster, faster!" the whole time. This kid is a serious thrill-seeker. . . .
No Good Deed Goes Unpunished
Mark decided to take the kids to their first pro-baseball game tonight. When we told Jafta, he was so excited. While we were getting ready, we noticed that Jafta went to his room and put his baseball cap on. And then when we were loading the car, we noticed that he had put his baseball, bat, and t-ball stand in the trunk. He was totally assuming that he would be playing. When we told him that they were just going to watch a game, he was so devastated. He had totally envisioned himself playing out . . .
Stop Making the Bed
Just wanted to share this time-saving tip with other moms:I like having our beds made, but I was getting really tired of making my son's bed every morning. He has a captain's bed, that is high and against the wall, so it was a lot of tucking, a lot of climbing, a lot of tucking. So. . . .I decided to leave his bed made and have him sleep on top of the comforter/quilt. At night, we just cover him with the red blanket. In the morning, all I have to do is fold the red blanket. No climbing, no . . .
Photos from Haiti
I love when I sit down to check my email and find photos of Keanan from the orphanage. This series had me smiling. Look at the "I'm gonna throw a rock at you" fake-out. I especially love the mischief in his smile on the middle shot. What a cutie! He will fit right in. . . .
Private Time
Have I mentioned how much I love the show Little Bill? These writers are genius, and today they made my life a little easier.Just this morning I was thinking about how it was probably time for Jafta to embrace the concept of "alone time". Jafta is a seriously social kid. He is an extrovert with a capital E. Jafta loves being around people, and it's adorable and loveable and inspiring and COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY EXHAUSTING. This is the kid who begged to have all four of us pack up and move into . . .
mommy, I want to fix my skin so it will be white
Ohhh . . . my heart is hurting tonight. This evening Jafta opened up about how he feels being the only brown person in our family, and it was devastating. He's really never commented about it before, and we try to keep the dialogue open. But tonight he said the following,Mommy, I don't like my brown skin. I want it to be white.I want to take my skin off.I don't want this hair. I want hair like daddy.I want to fix my skin so it will be white.I want my skin to look like yours and daddy's and . . .
Surrendering to Looking Stupid
I started running about a month ago. It's something I did when I was younger, and I have always wanted to start again. I want to be an "active mom", so I've gotten into the habit of running a few miles every day. It makes me feel great, and I know it's good for me. The trouble is, my body hasn't exactly morphed into what I think a runner should look like. In fact, I pretty much look exactly the same, even though I'm in much better shape. (my heart and lungs are so buff right now). But I know . . .
