I got to meet up with a blogging friend today. It's such a treat to get to know some of my online friends in real life. Sara and I have so much in common - we both have a child in another country that we have been waiting to come home. We've both been waiting over a year. We both have no idea when they will come home.I have an amazing group of friends that surround me, but very few with the shared experience of adoption. It was so reassuring to sit with Sara and talk about our feelings, . . .

A Carefree, Gay Joyride

September 13, 2008

Mark's mom went on a trip this week, and she parked her car at our house. She drives a powder-blue VW convertible bug. Mark thought it would be really fun to take the kids for a little spin on Saturday morning with the top down. It was a great day, the sun was shining, and the kids were excited. Until . . .Mark rounded the corner by our house, where four teenage boys were standing at the curb waiting for a bus. Apparently, they formed a quick opinion of Mark for driving such a feminine car, and . . .

Help for a Hurricane-Devastated Haiti

September 9, 2008

I've been trying to figure out a way to talk about what's going on in Haiti. God knows it's not being covered in the news here in the US. I've been trying to find the best article to link. One that would tell the whole story, one that would describe the sheer devastation that so many are facing due to the hurricanes that hit. I wanted to find the article that would tell you about the 500 dead, the lack of clean water, the inability to get aid past the flooding, and the measly contributions that . . .

Grilled Spinach Pizza and Romaine

September 8, 2008

It's still a little hot in our house for cooking inside, so we've been getting creative on the grill. (Plus, I refuse to acknowledge that summer is over.) This is our new favorite combo: grilled pizza with a grilled romaine lettuce salad. I add some spinach to the pizza sauce to give it a little extra nutrition, and we buy a whole grain dough from Trader Joe's.My 3-year-old especially loves this because I let him decorate his own pizza. I love it because on the grill, the crust comes out . . .

Running on Empty

September 7, 2008

A few weeks ago I posted about how I am trying to run/jog/limp at least 2 miles every day. So far, I have been pretty consistent with this, but pregnancy is putting a serious damper on things. For one, I am about as tired as humanly possible while still being awake. Have you ever watched Intervention, or Trainspotting, or Paula Abdul, and seen how a junkie looks after a hit? It's that eyes-half-closed, mumbly, incoherent, semi-concious state, where just completing a sentence is a whole lot of . . .

What I Learned Watching the RNC

September 6, 2008

1. Rudy and Sarah think that community organizing is lame. Let's all mock those who take a paycut to help the less fortunate. Philanthropy is stupid.2. Anyone who is not a Republican does not put country first.3. John McCain delivered his speech in front of a green screen, because he knows the Colbert Report will replay it all week with various user-submitted backgrounds. That makes me like him even more. I'm a sucker for a sense of humor, and McCain and Colbert have a funny bit going on. I'm . . .

What’s Best for You vs. What’s Best for Me

September 5, 2008

Jafta is starting preschool on Monday. Over the years, I've been witness to many a preschool conversations by my friends with older kids. I've always listened and glibly thought, come on, it's just preschool. Ah, sweet pre-parent naivete. So now that it's my turn, I've been agonizing over where to send Jafta to preschool since April. I kind of had a list of criteria that I was looking for in a preschool:1. it's realy, really close to my house2. he can eat lunch there so I can run more errands3. . . .

Two Pink Lines

September 4, 2008

Yep, that's right. I'm feeling nauseous, tired, and yucky, and it's not giardia this time! We are excited, nervous, elated, scared, freaked, and most of all . . . shocked. In case you don't know my history, this is my 7th pregnancy. I have two kids, and only one came out of my own va-jay-jay. So if you do the math, you can see that most of my pregnancies have not had happy endings.I have a condition that the medical community refers to as "recurrent spontaneous abortion". Now this title . . .
