wherein I get my LA fix for the rest of the year

May 10, 2011

Last week was a bit hectic, in part because I had 30+ finals to grade, and in part because I just completely and totally overextended myself.  Which, to borrow a phrase from Jafta, was rather prediculous of me. I somehow managed to find myself in LA 5 out of 7 nights last week.  And granted, LA is only about 45 miles from my home.  But most people in Orange County have about a 15 mile circumference that they are willing to drive before regarding something as a road trip.  . . .

that’s what SHE said: Mother’s Day edition

May 8, 2011

Happy Mother’s Day!  Today I’m linking up posts that I think deal in some of the universal aspects of being a mom.  Then and now from Is There Any Mommy Out There? Stacy describes the difference between kid number 1 and kid number 4.   The Great Confession from Amalah One of my favorite bloggers gives in to the minivan.  I confess to some shaudenfraude while reading this.   Dear Mom. I totally get it. Love Me. from Motherhood Uncensored It’s amazing how the . . .

what I want you to know: panic attacks

May 7, 2011

What I Want You to Know is a series of reader submissions.  It is an attempt to allow people to tell their personal stories, in the hopes of bringing greater compassion to the unique issues each of us face. If you would like to submit a story to this series, click here.  Today’s post is by Alana. I'm sure you've said it before. My room is so messy, my kids are so crazy, I'm so nervous about this test. . . I'm having a panic attack. But you haven't ever had one. I have multiple . . .

table & chair spray paint makeover

May 6, 2011

My friend Julie at Joy’s Hope does the most amazing, inspired things with spray paint.  I decided to dip my toes in the water of remodeling from a can. The kids’ table and chair set had seen better days.  It was a hand-me-down from friends, and it took a beating with my own kids, too.  (This picture was taken during our natural disaster phase, when we had a tarp separating our living room from nature for a few weeks).  I was also growing tired of how much blond wood we . . .

rally to restory unity

May 5, 2011

There is a rally to restore unity movement going around social media circles. Where the Daily Show's rally sought to bring it down a notch for America, some of us are trying to bring it down a notch for the Lord. This is my submission. . . .

working moms and narrow margins

May 5, 2011

As a working mom, there is very little (if any) room for error or variation from the norm.  I already have more on my plate than is probably realistic with four children – I work as a college professor, I write for a number of websites, and I edit and manage a staff of writers for another.  If everything worked out exactly as planned in any given day, I still probably wouldn’t have enough time to do everything, but I could manage.  However, then there are the weeks (or months) . . .

frequently spoken phrases

May 4, 2011

Is there an iphone app where I can record my voice saying a couple key phrases, and just have them on auto-repeat throughout the day?  These are some of the things I hear come out of my mouth multiple times a day: Is this a problem you can solve without my help? Is this a tattling situation? Is this a situation that calls for yelling/screaming/crying? Do you need to go to the bathroom? Why didn’t you go when I asked you five minutes ago? Please use an inside voice. Do you think our . . .

mother’s day gift guide

May 3, 2011

Mother’s day is coming up, and in case you are looking for something awesome for your own mom (or want to drop a couple hints to your husband) here are some things that would make great gifts. I’ve been following Karen Walrond’s blog Chookooloonks for quite some time, and I knew her book would be full of her stunning photography.  What I didn’t expect, though, is that it would be such a powerful emotional and spiritual guidebook.  The Beauty of Different addresses, those aspects of . . .

oh yes he did

May 2, 2011

Mark and I volunteered at Ground Zero shortly after 9/11.  Mark flew out as one of the first official chaplains allowed on the scene, while there was still ash in the air and hope of survivors.  About a week later, he returned and I went with him, finding the scene much more somber and mechanized.  We spent some of our days down at what was referred to as “the pile”, an eight-story heap of debris, making ourselves available for counseling with the men charged with the task of . . .
