halloween hangover

November 1, 2012

We are still recovering from Halloween over here. Let’s be honest . . . we are still recovering from our cruise! October was a very fun month but mama’s tired. We got home from the cruise two days before Halloween, and I was such a scrooge about the whole thing because I was so exhauster and so behind with unpacking/work/life. (I can finally walk without feeling like the world is rocking, thank-you-very-much).  Fortunately I had ordered the costumes and candy well in advance, since I knew . . .

twenty-one kid-friendly features onboard royal caribbean

October 31, 2012

I wanted to share some of the best aspects of our cruise in relation to traveling with the kids. This was supposed to be a top ten list, but I couldn’t narrow it down to 10. Or 15. Or even 20.  As a Fisher Price ambassador, one of the reasons for our trip was to experience the ways Fisher Price and Royal Caribbean have teamed up to make the cruise even more fun for young families. Here are a few of the stand-out features of the Allure of the Sea for my kids: Free ice cream All day, every . . .

@#$% people say to transracial families

October 30, 2012

Last year, one of my favorite YouTube videos was Chescaleigh’s hilarious @#$% White Girls Say to Black Girls. After watching it, my friend Jillian and I offhandedly said how fun it would be to do one about what people say to adoptive families. Then I posted about it, and you guys gave me even more ideas, and Jillian and I got to work. We enlisted her friend Deb, who is biracial and married to a Jewish guy, and therefore subjected to all kinds of crazy comments herself. We spent a Sunday filming . . .

kembe’s first visit to haiti

October 29, 2012

We’ve had an amazing time on our family cruise this week – I’ve got lots of stories to recount once we are home and unpacked. But I wanted to share about our day in Haiti.  This was Kembe’s first visit back since he came home shortly after the earthquake, and our first trip as a complete family. It was surreal to return via a cruise ship since last week I visited with a Help One Now and saw some of the most impoverished conditions in Haiti.  The little stretch of beach that Royal . . .

that’s what SHE said: edition “online words that describe my own thoughts”

October 28, 2012

My Drug and My Defense | Shauna Neiquist Some people isolate and curl inward, some people dip back into an eating disorder that’s been held mostly at bay for a long time. Some people become angry, wielding rage as power against all the things that scare them.  This is what I do: I keep myself busy, for a whole constellation of reasons. I do it because I'm addicted to the feeling of being capable, because I hate to be bored, because I hate having to face the silence, because it might force . . .

how to teach kids to help with packing

October 28, 2012

We are nearing the end of our cruise, and I’m trying my best not to work on this trip, but I did want to share some quick tips for having your kids help with packing for a vacation. Step 1: Make a list of items for the kids to pack. Use illustrations if you have kids who are not yet reading.  Keep it very simple. Step 2: Yell Supervise as kids follow the list. Threaten Give gentle reminders for them to stay on task. Step 3: Check your email while the kids complete packing on their own. . . .

new episode of right mom/left mom: women’s issues in the 2012 election

October 25, 2012

Our family is currently cruising around the Caribbean.  We had a great day in Haiti on Tuesday, but the hurricane in Jamaica means that we’ve been re-routed to float around at sea for a few days. The kids don’t mind. I’ve got lots of stories to share of our trip, but in the meantime I wanted to link to our latest episode of Right Mom/Left Mom.  In this webcast, Elizabeth and I discuss the supposed “War on Women” that has been leveraged at both parties. We also talk about reproductive . . .

what I want you to know about PCOS, infertility, and infant loss

October 23, 2012

What I Want You to Know is a series of reader submissions. It is an attempt to allow people to tell their personal stories, in the hopes of bringing greater compassion to the unique issues each of us face. If you would like to submit a story to this series, click here. Today’s guest posts is by Cynthia Coppinger. My whole life I knew the one thing I wanted to be was a mom. It was my goal. I knew that I would achieve it one way or another, but I was going to be a mom. The first year that I was . . .

too tired for date night

October 20, 2012

I've got some fun news to share: my friend Sarah and I are starting a weekly webcast at Babble called Mama Said, where we'll be dishing about topics from parenting to periods. (Yay! Menstruation! Stay tuned for that.)  Sarah is a fantastic blogger (truly, one of my favorites) and also a good friend.  In our first episode, we are talking about date nights. Specifically, how much we suck at them. Click here to watch, and let us know how you grade yourself in the date night department. . . .
