“Rock Star Camp”
The kids have been home for most of the summer but for a few weeks, I tried to put them in a camp that would break up the routine (and give me a break.) Last week, they did a music camp. It wasn’t called “rock star camp”, but that’s what they all dubbed it. It was pretty cute. They all formed bands and then did a performance on the last day. Over the course of the week, they grew more and more concerned with their wardrobe choices. India wanted to look “fashion-y” each day, so she . . .

The babysitter’s club: free at our house
Our our cruise last month, my kids were huge fans of the on-board kids club. It was a 24-7 party with young adult "counselors" who have a lot more energy than I do. They loved going, and I think they are having withdrawals.A few days ago, India decided to create her own kid's club. In our garage. First she hung up signs: Translation: Kids club for only –31 [kids under 3] with coaches of 6 and 8+ [years old] for free! Today! With toys. I mean, really. Who could resist dropping a . . .

Questions of eternal significance: how to keep kids from lying
Usually these questions are frivolous and insignificant (hence the sarcastic title.) But this is one we are really struggling with in our house: lying. All of them do it from time to time, but one of our kids is really lying. A lot. Mostly to avoid punishment. I will admit, I do not do well with it. I can handle all kinds of misbehavior but lying really sets me off. I think that's true for Mark as well. The other day we were so sick of it that Mark pulled out the Bible for a little lesson . . .

mid-summer photo dump
Woah. You guys. Seems I'm a little behind on the ole' "dump all the photos from the phone onto the blog" routine. I just found these pictures that I drafted in late June. Oops! Here's a whole summer's worth of pictures. Our kids went to school until the end of June. It seems like the whole rest of the world was out of school before we were. The "twins" had their kindergarten graduation ceremonies. At the same time. In different classrooms. So I ran back and forth and missed Kembe's name . . .

Pressure-Cooker Kindergarten | The Boston Globe Ben Russell, assistant director of early childhood education for the Boston Public Schools, is struggling to find the right formula, too. “Some kids aren’t ready, and I fear for those kids.” Children who struggle in kindergarten are the ones who grow to hate school and who will likely continue to fall behind, he explains. “What becomes of kids who are not reading at the third-grade level?” asks Russell. “We use those numbers to create . . .
