DIY swimsuit drying rack

September 6, 2013

This little hack for drying swimsuits may seem like a no-brainer, but the concept eluded me until this summer. We used to throw wet swimsuits over the shower curtain rod, which meant that the suits dripped into the bath but also out onto the floor. The other issue with this technique is that the kids could not reach their own swimsuits,  and since they were in and out of their suits all summer it became frustrating for all of us that they required assistance to retrieve their suit.  A . . .

Easy bento lunch ideas

September 6, 2013

The kids are back n school and we are giving the Bento boxes a go. So far so good. It’s funny how a small change like a new lunchbox can make packing the lunches easer to bear. I love how easy these are to pack. No more ziplocs, containers, etc. Here are a few of our lunches from the past week:   India is my picky eat. She got a turkey sandwich on sourdough, hummus and carrots, almonds, and an orange.     Karis got a peanut-butter sandwich, blueberries and almonds (her favorite . . .

iphone photo dump: random summer assortment

September 5, 2013

Here are all of the photos that were on my laptop that crashed mid-summer. Thanks, computer repair guy!     The girls and I dipped our toes in the waters of hair crimping this summer. So 80’s!   Earlier this summer I spoke at Fish Fest – a big stadium concert.     I think this was the biggest crowd I’ve ever spoken to. I did not puke. Success.   Just hanging out in a storm drain. Karis wanted me to cut her camp tee the way I’d . . .

Questions of eternal significance: Wii vs. XBOX?

September 4, 2013

Several months back I asked this question and most people suggested we start with a Wii since the games are more geared to kids. We bought a used Wii system from some friends and we’ve been using it a lot. I’ve limited our usage thus far to Just Dance, Guitar Hero, Wii Sports and Wii Fit. I know there are some other great games for kids but I’ve been trying to avoid the games that use the joystick because I think they will favor them over the more active games, and they are pretty enthusiastic . . .

Let’s talk about the Downton Abbey trailer

September 3, 2013

Well, folks, the Downtwon Abbey trailer just dropped . . . a cruel preview to the show that we Americans will have to wait months for before it comes to PBS. (Or at least you suckers will because you KNOW I’ll be getting all McGyver so I can watch it when the Brits do.) It’s possible that I watched this four times in a row, and then once again, stopping at every frame. Who are all these people kissing? Why is Bates sad?Is there an inter-racial romance? Is Mary moving on? WILL SOMEONE HAVE A BABY . . .

Back to school 2013

September 3, 2013

Confession: I took these pictures a few days before the first day of school. Every year I see mothers posting these cute pictures of their kids marking what grade they are in, and every year I think I want to do this myself and fail. I fail because I fail at mornings in general, but also because the first day of school is always so generally hectic and a shock to our lazy summer system. So this year, I decided I would capture a photo of them on a day we had nothing going on. I put them all in . . .

Two prayers for Labor Day

September 2, 2013

Yesterday our church led the congregation in two prayers for Labor Day. I will be honest – I have never given a lot of thought to Labor Day, and I’ve certainly never thought of it in a Christian framework. But I appreciated these prayers, and the way they made me contemplate justice as it pertains to labor issues. I thought you might appreciate them too. A Prayer for Labor Sunday God, help us to build a new world in the midst of the old. A world where all worker are valued. A world where those . . .
