On this episode, a reader asked Sarah and I how we manage screen time at home with our kids. It’s still a struggle, but here’s what we do: What are the rules around screen time in your house? . . .
TBT: The conundrum with the ornate feather
On Thursdays I revive a post from the archives. This is from July 2009. I have grossly underestimated my four-year-old.We are having some issues with sleep in our house. People are often asking me how Karis is sleeping. And for a newborn, she is sleeping okay. It's the other two that decided to up the ante since Karis was born. I am pretty sure that the three of them have a daily meeting where they discuss the shifts they will cover to ensure an even spread of waking us up throughout the night. . . .
Eshet Chayil: On noble women
This post is sponsored by the #sheisnoble campaign My friend Rachel Held Evans is fond of using the phrase Eshet Chayil to affirm the noble women in her life. It’s a Hebrew phrase (fitting as I’m writing this from Jerusalem) that is used as an affirmation in Proverbs for a “woman of valor.” This noble woman is described as someone who opens her hand to the poor, who cares for her family, and who lives with dignity, wisdom, and kindness. She’s the kind of woman most of us want to be. I’m in . . .
Wednesday’s Child: Faith
Every Wednesday I feature a child recently highlighted by a local Wednesday's Child newscast to share the stories of children from around the country who are waiting for a family. My hope is that this can broaden exposure for the children highlighted, but also serve as a reminder that these children represent thousands of children currently in the foster-care system. Perhaps their stories will inspire you to consider opening your home to a child needing a family. For more information and to . . .
What I want you to know about honesty and trust
What I Want You to Know is a series of reader submissions. It is an attempt to allow people to tell their personal stories, in the hopes of bringing greater compassion to the unique issues each of us face. If you would like to submit a story to this series, click here. Today’s guest post is by Andrea. My husband has told me that I am the most honest person he knows. I take that as a huge compliment, for that is exactly what I strive to be. Honesty, though not . . .
Questions of eternal significance: chores you hate, chores you love
I was having a conversation with a friend the other day, and she was talking about how much she abhors laundry. She will go to great lengths to avoid doing the laundry, and it seems to pile up at her house. I was laughing a bit because laundry is one thing I really don't mind doing. Now dishes . . . I hate the dishes. Well, scratch that. I like loading the dishes. Can't stand unloading them. I'm neutral on swiffering the floors. But cleaning the bathroom? THE WORST. Every part of . . .
What I want you to know about being pregnant, sick, and on state benefits

If you would like to submit a story to this series, click here. Today’s guest post is by Kari. I see it. Every day, these “clever” Facebook posts about all of these lazy people “enjoying” state benefits that "you" pay for with your hard-earned money. "You" continually . . .
Are we growing a generation of people addicted to screen-time?
For the last several years I've taught a class on Addictive Behavior in a graduate psychology program at a local university. It’s a fun class, but I’ve noticed an interesting thing over the past five years since I started teaching. Every semester, the students are getting more and more zombie-like during class. Every semester, I am seeing more faces staring at their computer screens during class intead of paying attention (probably Facebooking or emailing as opposed to writing notes). Or . . .
That’s what SHE said: attention-policing and the dress, black men and word associations, Amy Poehler on looking silly, and more . . .
How To Get Rid Of Clutter And Live Abundantly Have you ever owned anything? This is why you cannot forgive any of your former lovers. Things like “having chairs” is preventing you from living your best life, and also you should throw away any item of clothing you’re not currently wearing. If it’s not on your skin, you don’t really love it, do you? Friday Finds: Krochet Kids International
Last week I was in Peru visiting the headquarters of Krochet Kids there. I've talked at length about how their program is empowering vulnerable women there, (In fact, we still have a few women waiting for sponsorship to receive job skills and employment now and mentoring for their own business in the future.) But I also wanted to share the products! Not only is this organization doing amazing things . . . their stuff is just really, really cute. 1. The Devin Canvas Tote 2. The Ryan . . .
