This is empowerment: day 1 with Krochet Kids Peru

February 16, 2015

I am spending this week in Lima, Peru with my friends Sarah, Heather, and Rebecca. We are visiting with my friends The Goodfellows, who run the Peru arm of Krochet Kids, an organization that provides training, employment, childcare, and mentorship for impoverished women. I’ve written about Krochet Kids before. I love their model of empowerment and I’m thrilled to be here again with some other bloggers in the hopes that we can expand the reach of Krochet Kids’ mission. Yesterday was Sunday and . . .

On family, formed and found

February 13, 2015

Our holiday celebration was a bit delayed this year. Well, not necessarily delayed. We celebrated in California. But we didn't leave for our celebration with my family in Florida until January 1, and it was a pretty extended trip. We had almost 2 weeks of family and friend fun in Florida before we headed back to real life and the awful, awful reality of makeup schoolwork. (New math. Shudder.) The first stop in our Florida week o' fun was to Naples. We had plans to spend a few days with some . . .

#TBT: Transforming backpacks and deluxe neck pouches

February 12, 2015

On Thursdays I bring back a post from the archives. This one is from May 2010. I am in a hotel room in Seattle.  Alone.  Glass of wine in hand.  Ahhh . . . it is heavenly.  I don't think I've sat in this much quiet since  -- well, I can't even think of a time.   I am here to speak at a women's conference tomorrow.  Jafta came along to have a slumber party at his cousins' house.  It was so nice flying with just one kid - Jafta was awesome on the . . .

10 great Valentine’s cards you should never give anyone

February 10, 2015

Valentine’s Day: I love it and I hate it. I’m not the craftiest person in the world, but I do enjoy helping my kids make fun, creative, personal Valentine’s to give to all their friends. However, there are a couple of things I DON’T like about the holiday. For one thing, it’s starting to become just another one of those holidays designed to make busy moms feel bad, because they didn’t have time to take cute photos or make a fancy cake and matching table setting or arrange a Pinterest-worthy candy . . .

Mama Said: Weighing in on the vaccinations debate

February 9, 2015

In our latest series of videos, Sarah and I took question from our readers, and one wanted use to share our opinion on vaccinations. And because we love nothing more than to stir up controversy, we decided to wade in. (Actually, I don’t love stirring up controversy, and recognize this is a very heated topic right now. And we almost skipped it entirely.) I wrote more about my stance on vaccines here.   What are your thoughts about vaccinating? Please keep it respectful!   . . .
